Very SLOW transfers from my memory cards
« on: October 20, 2022, 10:40:01 pm »

Im experiencing Very SLOW transfers from my memory cards to my computer.

USB 2 card reader * Promaster

cards San Disk Estreme 64 Gb

the times look like over a minute to transfer one 21 MGP 21 mb file.

any ideas on what the issue or issues could be?

Thank you

USB2 is 10-20 mb/sec...  slow but not that slow. ( but much slower than the card can produce)

try formatting the card in the camera
a different USB entrance
a different USB cable.

Does your computer have USB 3.0? They look the same as other USB ports but usually have blue on the inside or a little SS logo.
If so, a USB3 reader plugged into one of those ports should be much faster. But if the computer is the bottleneck you may need to do more. The reader is a good inexpensive first thing to try.

Does your computer have a card slot? If so that is by far the fastest way.

i FINALLY decided to determine which usb specs belonged to my USB.2....promaster card reader...

I suspect that its time for a upgrade.

Thank you

i had no idea what a burdern the usb 2 card reader was...

USB 2.0 transfer speed is 480 megabits per second (Mbps), while USB 3.0 transfer speed is 4,800 Mbps.

Thank you.

You're welcome. The difference is huge and this may reveal another bottleneck but it's an easy (and cheap!) one to eliminate first thing.
Let us know how it goes with a new reader. Hopefully that does the trick.

I didn't realize the speed difference between my USB 2/3 XQD reader and old MacPro and the same card using USB-3/C on my MBP M-1. Much, much faster. The older system brings in 24MP images in about 5-7 at a time and the newer with much newer ports/card reader (something cheap from Amazon) brings in images 20-25 at a time.

Needless to say I now ingest, rate and sort my photos on the MBP and use the ancient MacPro for processing and crafting images in Photoshop which it still does well, but a bit slower for some things.

I just recovered from two short term electrical interruptions....mere minutes apart...

Adobe lightroom using my current antique USB 2 card reader just  uploaded approximately 200 moderate sized  raw files images in what looked like ten minutes.

I was too shocked towards the beginning of the startlingly rapid import to take physical notes as to the start time..

I could live without a new faster card reader...but im buying it anyway, who knows what wonders await.

I just bought a LaCie 1Big Dock 10TB hard drive that comes with card reader slots.
Seems to wok well and provides Thunderbolt 3 speeds.
