Gatorboard warpage
« on: October 12, 2022, 01:30:15 pm »

I plan to mount canvas to Gatorboard and was wondering about warpage at larger sizes. They will be framed and I’d like to use 3/16”.
If you use Gator, is there a size that you switch over to 1/2”, or have any thoughts about warping?

We do gator mounts by the hundreds. All canvas goes on gator with Miracle Muck liquid adhesive. We use 3/16” up to 24x36. The 30x40’s are fine on 3/8” we have some 1/2” but rarely use it as the prices have really increased as of late. With liquid adhesive after we apply the canvas we lay them out on the floor to dry and then flatten. They can get like a potato chip with wet adhesive applied only to one side but after drying they flatten right up. Most if not all of the larger mounts are then installed in frames. We do quite a few paper prints with the gator that comes with adhesive on one side. Just did a batch of 20 last week. Brayer the print down, flip over and trim with a razor and done. Rc papers can be finicky to mount. We do them but don’t really like to. You can get a speck or two of dirt under a heavy Matt paper and get away with it. If you have something like premium luster photo paper and get a speck it shows and you have to rip apart and start over.

Thank you for that information, Dan. That’s great to hear that I can skip the 1/2” because I noticed the price jumps up considerably at that thickness.
