Apple P3 color
« on: August 29, 2022, 08:07:11 am »

Am I right in thinking that Apple's P3 on their iPad Pros is similar to, but not the same as, Adobe RGB, but has less coverage than ProPhoto RGB?  Also, can the iPad Pro screen be profiled?

I am thinking of getting an iPad Pro, but may wait till October as there are rumours it will be updated.

Any info will be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

The Display P3 color space was created by Apple and uses the DCI P3 primaries, a D65 white point, and the sRGB transfer function.

It a variant of P3, an RGB color space. DCI-P3 (Digital Cinema Initiative) is used with digital theatrical motion picture distribution. Display P3 is a variant developed by Apple Inc. for wide-gamut displays.

It's not the same correct. Nor does it have to be nor does it matter.

Andrew, forgive me if this is stupid question.  Why does it not matter? One of my uses for an iPad Pro would be to display photos take with a Fuji X-T4 set to Adobe RGB color space, processed in LR Classic and exported as a TIFF with Adobe RGB.  Does not the color space used on the viewing device affect what you see?

Best wishes,

Because the color gamut of that or other emissive displays is what it is. The difference between Adobe RGB (1998) and P3 is tiny. There's a slight difference between say sRGB and ColorMatch RGB and both were built for a specifics which a display may or may not provide.
Adobe RGB (1998) was a mistake in creation but again, it is what it is. P3 (and DCI P3) are again different RGB color spaces built for a specific type of Aimpoint. Your iPad will have a  P3 color gamut, my NEC SpectraView Adobe RGB (1998); so what? Both are wide gamut displays. And above and beyond their native color gamuts, we can calibrate devices to whatever aim point we desire (well not so much on an iPad but hopefully, you get the idea). The max, native color gamut of a display is simply one attribute.
The key is color management such that the display is always divorced from the editing color space as outlined long ago here:

In the ArgyllCMS releases there is a freely usable DisplayP3.icm ICCV2 profile based on Apple P3 color specs.

I have Apple studio display and Eizo CG279x both calibrated to native d65 l100 with ccprofiler and color navigator, sitting right next to each other, I've set same gray color background on both of them, they look different(Apple looks "cooler" Eizo"neutral") in terms grey or white but when I open color images they look "identical" in photoshop or preview, obviously it's in my perception.
