Software to use with a Spyder 4 on Monterey
« on: August 03, 2022, 06:47:42 am »

Hello everyone

Is there any way I can use my old Spyder 4 to calibrate my MacBook Air which is running Monterey? I only have the Spyder 4 Elite software which doesn't seem to work under Monterey. I guess what I am wondering is if there are other apps with which I could use the Spyder 4? I don't see anything on the Datacolor site that I would be able to either buy the current Spyder app separately.

Thank you kindly in advance
Philip

You may want to investigate DisplayCal which runs using the excellent ArgyllCMS.  Not a MAC user but I would be surprised if the application has not been updated to any new OS.

DisplayCal supports that device (not that it's a very good device <g>)

None. Software may "support" it but there is no 64 bit driver for Spyder 4 so nothing will work. Forced obsolescence.

ArgyllCMS's driver for the Spyder 4 is available in a 64 bit version. See <https://www.argyllcms.com/downloadmac.html>

That isn’t forced obsolescence in any way. There’s nothing stopping you or anyone else from writing their own driver, just as Graeme Gill has done. I don’t and never have used a Datacolor device but a hardware company, quite obviously, won’t support an older device forever and if there is no business case to be made for it, why would you assume they should keep updating it when there is likely a very small user base still using such a device?

If you had made/designed some devices many years ago and were subsequently forced to write new drivers for every new OS released or every OS update, wouldn’t you expect to be paid for your time and effort? This is not forced obsolescence, it’s called normal business practices.

Of course it is forced obsolescence. I didn't say there was anything for or against that, only that it exists in everything. Users are generally not geeks. They generally don't want to have to write their own software. That is why we pay money for software.
The link shown does not indicate any driver for Spyder 4 anyway, though that may not be the case.

At this point, it's not forced; the old product is still useable: There is 64-bit driver for Spyder 4.
