Smart Collections and Edit Date
« on: May 03, 2022, 10:13:09 am »

I wanted to create a Smart Collection which includes all the files I have worked on recently, regardless of the date of image capture.  I created rules using the Date>Edit Date item, to cover 2022.

I thought it was working, but then I found a file that I edited last week which was not in the new Smart Collection.  I note that in the EXIF metadata, there is no item called Edit Date.  There are 2 EXIF fields that seem to be candidates: the Metadata Date and the Date Time.  These two are not identical, and I don't understand the difference.

So 2 questions: where do Smart Collection rules draw Edit Date data from?  How do I modify my Smart Collection rules to include all the images I edited this year?

This SC seems to work for me, what metadata fields are you referring to otherwise, can you post a screen capture?

I want to include images which have capture dates in past years, but which I have worked on this year.  So I used the Edit Date for the rule.  But some recently edited images fail to be included for unclear reasons.  Also unclear where Lr gets the data for the Edit Date rule, as there is no EXIF field called exactly that.

I did separate rules for tiffs and psb, as I wanted to exclude raw files with Lr edits only.  Example attached.

What edits? Has Adjustments is AFAIK, the only critera for 'edits'. Again, what metadata are you seeing that doesn't show this? What does "worked on" mean?

These are images that get initial adjustments in Lr, then go to Ps for more work, and come back to Lr as either tiffs or psb files.  If Edit Date is the last date Lr adjustments are applied, that could explain this issue.  The image that fell through the cracks had gone back to Ps a second time without any adjustments in Lr before the second round of editing.

It would be ideal if I could create a rule based on Metadata Date or Date Time as on the EXIF data included below, from the file in question.  But that doesn't appear to be available.

That was the issue.  Edit date does not recognize edits made in an external editor.  I made a slight adjustment tweak in Lr, and the file now appears in the Smart Collection.

Thank you Andrew.
