What do you do with your images?

Recently, a friend asked me that question: "What do you do with your images?" The reality is, not much. I enjoy the process of taking them and working on them – perhaps even more during Covid, as I sought to look after physical and mental health through local walks with my camera, and the occasional short 'outing' with my wife or a friend. I confess that I haven't even been very active on social media. This month, however, I set aside a little time to do a review of last year's images, and put together a short (well, 9-minutes) video of the results.

John That was a very nice slide show.  You have a great eye for interesting things as well as aesthetic eye candy.  I pretty much do what you did especially with vacations and show them on my 75" 4K TV.  I copied the show on to a memory card that plugs into the USB jack of the smart TV.  Turn to the TV's video app to play it. 

I stopped printing and enjoy the process of taking pictures and scanning the film when it gets back from the developers.  I'm working on my first coffee table book which might be another thing you can try.   It would make a nice gift if you would do it with yours and of course leaving it on top of your coffee table for guests to see without making it seem like you're pushing it on them.

Curious what processes and apps you used to make this wonderful video?

Thanks, John & Alan. I used ProShow Gold, a PC-only app that isn't sold or supported anymore, but still works just fine for a show such as this. I'll probably take another crack at a book someday. I started one for Blurb in Lightroom. Got pretty far and then I did something that made everything reflow and resize. Major frustration. But I know many others use this method so it's probably me.

Your images are wonderful! Many of them would likely have caught my eye, too.

But as to your question--I really don't "do" much with my images beyond my own web page and Facebook page and maybe a local show now and then. Selling photos is a rare occurrence. It's gratifying to have someone willing to pay for one of my images, but I am thankful that my eating does not depend on that!

Just out of curiosity. How does the rendering over YouTube compare with your original file?
As far as I am informed for some reason the resolution after compression by YouTube is bad.
However, your images look good in my monitor.

I've made three Blurb books so far.  Each one more satisfying than the previous.  Highly recommended.
I used inDesign, but now you could use Affinity Publisher if you don't like Adobe's subscription model.

Peter do your recommend any particular Blurb paper for BW?  and color?

The books contained colour images exclusively. 

I used the most expensive lustre paper and the largest landscape size with the hard cover and slipcover.

The reproductions were excellent.  Any photographic limitations evident were mine.

Those who have seen the books are universally complimentary, including my fiercest critic, my wife of 52 years. 

Actually, I'd like to correct that.  My fiercest critic is me.  And my opinion of the books is the same as the others'.

Again, a highly recommended way to utilize your images.

The YouTube video is quite respectable compared to the original. A few years ago I uploaded a trial video to YT and, like you, wasn't happy. But I thought I'd give it another try, and it was so much better this time. I currently have a YouTube 'Premium' subscription (when Google Music became YouTube music there was a promotion to get YT Premium for an extra couple of bucks). I don't know if that has any bearing, but it might. Much of what I view on YT comes from V-loggers, and I'm sure they get the ultimate YT experience.

You can download 4k 2160 video slide shows such as this.   I don't know how much more compression Youtube adds.  But check it out on your TV and see if it looks good enough for you.  I show it on my 75" and it looks fine.  Frankly, 2K on my 4K TV looks good too unless you sit really close.  Then, the artifacts are more apparent.  Also, since video is showing let's say 30 frames per second, you don't see artifacts as you would with a still picture display.  Make sure your Youtube is set at the highest rate.(2160-4K).  Lower rates are available that would give let's say 720 for example on the same video.  It depends on your bandwidth.

I did this last year, created a vanity book of my photos. It was very satisfying, and I really enjoyed giving copies to friends and family. FWIW I designed the entire book in MS Publisher and had it printed by Bookmobile.com. I was ecstatic about the result, particularly the printing quality and accuracy of color reproduction.

Here's the cover of my first-ever book. A friend took me on a fishing trip, I made him a coffee table book. He ordered five copies.
The second image is the cover of my second book, a gift to another friend about our week long trip to Bhutan. Second image is a screen grab, so IQ is poor.
