Help ASAP. Gone Jan 7 AM for 2 months
« on: January 05, 2007, 02:27:47 pm »

Hi,
Any advice for getting a DVD burning software working on my laptop ASAP? (I'm leaving this weekend, Sunday, JAN. 7th as soon as I wake up for 2 months and my girlfriend where I will be staying does not have internet service or a working computer) Or, I'll take another solution so I can save my raw files & pdf files? HP gave me Sonic software with their bundled laptop pavillion dv5237 and Sonic does not recognize the drive or disc. Yesterday was the first day I tried the Sonic software: Sonic DigitalMedia Plus v7. I am able to write to CD's with the Windows xp using copy  or send to. I'm able to read CD's and DVD's.

After spending an hour in India, the CS tried to tell me that I needed an HP instructor to make a DVD and it is a service that you pay for. I told him no way. The instructions are not that complicated and knowledgeable people have told me that the program is not recognizing the drive. Program even says "No Drive Detected" 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free space. When I asked HP if I could just download the software and reinstall it, he said they can only do it with a system recovery. No Thanks. When they don't know what the F they are talking about, there answer is always a system recovery. I tied Sonic / Roxio company. Their live chat is half dead, so I didn't get any help from them. They do believe the problem will not be solved by re-downloading the program and reinstalling, (but I also don't see that option available)

I just need a simple DVD burning software for burning data so I don't use up my hard drive with all my pictures, raw and pdf that I'll be making and music files for listening (and maybe some other small data files for backup if I put alot of time into creating them or they carry important information).

Is there any decent freeware out there that will accomplish this on WindowsXP? I was NOT planning on taking my external drive, cause almost everything backed up is on it. I thought the new CD/DVD burner was working, but I guess I only made a CD on it.  I have access FRIDAY AND SATURDAY before I leave to a DVD burner, on a desktop, computer THAT is itel core  2+ gig hertz. The DVD's i have are DVD-R and the software on that computer is Nero Start Smart. Maybe you can think of a plan B solution. I have about 50 gb on my external drive. The other computer in the house is a dual core 2+ something gig hertz and the dvd's around here are DVD-R 1-8x. The other computer has a Nero Start Smart burning program. Do you have any idea how long it would take to burn my information on the external drive to the DVD's and then take the external drive with me? I'm running out of time to catch a plane. And I still have other things to organize before I go.

Thanks in advance.

It's always a pleasure to hear from people that have been there, done that or just happen  to know.

If you're sure that you have a DVD burner and not a CD burner/dvd reader (they were pretty common in laptops) you could try http://www.cdburnerxp.se/index.php

It is free.  So it is probably worth a shot.

About all I can think of right now.

Or check out Nero. It's a very good piece of software, IIRC it has a free trial, so you can verify whether it works before paying for it.

Sorry if I missed anything in the reading of the thread.

I recall reading that WinXP burning software/engine does not happily co habit with other software such a Direct CD.

At the time I think there was a recommended way of turning off the WinXP buring software and therafter the 3rd party software worked AOK.

If I can find the info I will post it.

HTH maybe

OK here you go here is one link that makes ref to turning off the WinXP burning function http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=43693 worth a try perhaps to see if your current software (Sonic?) behaves itself afterwards.  Oh by the way Nero rocks IMHO

As an aside I've switched over to CDBurnerXp for my CD/DVD burning needs.  Doesn't do everything Roxio/Nero does but it is small and free.
