Paper Profiles missing with Big Sur
« on: December 26, 2021, 06:42:10 pm »

I can no longer access paper profiles for my Epson ET 8550 printer in Adobe’s Lightroom Mac V11.1
Example profiles are:
EPSON ET-8550 L8180 Series Premium Luster.icc
and
RR Arctic Polar Luster Ep ET-8550-sa.icc

Using Big Sur 11.6.1 Red River Profiles located in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles and Epson software embedded profiles (/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/ICCProfiles/EP2006PM1.profiles/Contents/Resources/EPSON ET-8550 L8180 Series Ultra Glossy.icc) were accessible to Lightroom.

Using Epson Print Layout V1.1.5, I can only use the embedded Epson Paper Profiles for the ET 8550, 3rd party icc profiles are NOT available in the print layout. Is there a way to add 3rd party profiles to Epson Print layout?

After installing Mac OS Big Sur 11.6.2 All paper ICC profiles, Epson and RR, have vanished from Lightroom.

Searching Apple’s web site I found this announcement:

> ColorSync
>
> Available for: macOS Big Sur
>
> Impact: Processing a maliciously crafted image may lead to arbitrary code execution
>
> Description: A memory corruption issue in the processing of ICC profiles was addressed with improved input validation.
>
> CVE-2021-30942: Mateusz Jurczyk of Google Project Zero

In the Lightroom Forum it was indicated that the missing profile problem does not exist with Mac OS Monterey! My Mac is too old (Late 2014 Model) for the Monterey up grade.

That’s why I’m looking for a solution using Big Sur as I’m waiting for the next generation M2 processor to show up in an iMac this summer.

By the way the Qimage Q1 print utility does not see the RED River profiles or the embedded Epson profiles at all!

What’s the solution?
Thanks!

The 'fix' is to find the location of the package where Epson installed them. Then use the Contextual Menu "Show Folder Contents". Move (or copy) to the correct location on your Mac. Quit Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, they should now show up. The path for my P800 and 3880 is:
/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/ICCProfiles/**EP1408OL2.profiles/Contents/Resources

** this name may vary, depending on the Epson you have. For my 3880, the name is Pro3880.profiles

We have a much bigger problem here than misplaced profiles.

I updated from Big Sur 11.6.1 to 11.6.2 (security update) and NOW many of my custom printer profiles can not be recognized by Photoshop, Lightroom or the Mac Colorsync utility, even though they are in the same folder as profiles that these programs can recognize.

Even worse, when I try and print using profiles LR/PS can recognize, they print the colors WRONG.

When I boot off of a backup made with 11.6.1 everything works fine.

You may be affected by the '16-bit' problem?
I found that after upgrading to 11.6.1 the 16-bit bug reappeared after being absent for about a year or two. The symptoms are that the darker tones all print the same, being 'filled-in' or 'bunched-up'. This was readily apparent when I printed a profiling target on my Epson SP3880. Not sure if it's an Epson-only bug?
Was cured by turning 16-bit OFF in the Epson driver.
The bug is still present in 11.6.2, BUT the good news is that it appears to be fixed in 12.1, although this was on another Mac with a fresh install of the Epson driver (10.85). In both cases running over Ethernet and with Epson IP NOT Bonjour.

On the 'other' forum it has been suggested that the 'missing' profiles may be caused by the AirPrint driver. Seems plausible.

Not sure about the ET-8550 but all my Epson printers require the IP driver. If you download the Bonjour/Airprint driver it does not have the printer settings. (Not sure about the profiles?)

That problem is the security update dot release of Apples. Roll back a version or forward if you want to print.

Absolutely a bug in 11.6.2 Big Sur.  See:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253477527?answerId=256589863022&login=true .  I have not really had problems with the security updates before but this one (going from 11.6.1 to 11.6.2) caused this problem.  I rechecked using back-up startup disk clone with 11.6.1 and all was well.  Toggling back to the main disk with 11.6.2 and the problem returned (problem was that some, not all icc paper profiles were not seen by PS/LR or by ColorSync).  Due to my then lack of understanding how the newer operating systems divided the system from data on startup disks, I could not just recopy my cloned 11.6.1 disk to the main disk (I could have apparently if I had a Time Machine backup).  My choices were to use the much slower clone as the main disk or upgrade to Monterey and see what happens.  Made a Time Machine clone of my main disk and "upgraded" to Monterey 12.1.  Actually went well and all icc profiles are again seen by PS/LR and ColorSync and appear to work just like with 11.6.1.  For fun I used my Big Sur desk top image and since I did not find any use for the new features in Monterey, my current "updated" computer looks and acts just like it did with Big Sur 11.6.1.  Will think long and hard about the next security upgrade. (and will have a full Time Machine backup before hand).

An Update: I updated my Mac OS to Monterrey 12.2.1. ALL my printing profiles are now recognized by ColorSync, LR & PS. HOWEVER colors still print WRONG in 16 bit. Turning off 16 bit printing solves the problem. I'm on the latest version of LR & PS desktop CC & latest Epson 3880 print driver. I've been involved with Digital Printing since the beginning, don't remember the color pipeline ever being this messed up, thanks to Apple. Apple has left some users with machines that can't upgraded to Monterey screwed.

The old 16-bit bug is back in the Epson driver. And it doesn't do anything any way.
