Canon IPF 6400 - What is high mileage?
« on: December 09, 2021, 11:27:10 am »

I am watching a Canon IPF 6400 on ebay - the seller says it has done 5197 m2, is that a lot for this machine? I know nothing about them. What would be a good price?

I bought my ipf6400 used. I don't really know what "high mileage" is for the printer. When I bought mine I just made sure everything worked.

Just make sure it produces a clean nozzle check and have the seller print out a picture to check for banding and ink smearing. Also ask if it has OEM ink instead on 3rd party ink in it. Check ink levels and maintenance cart level. Also ask how old the heads are (they usually have to be replaced approximately every two years regardless of how much they were used).

I paid $400 for mine but it had 3rd party ink in it which I had to replace. A short time later I had to replace both heads, so just expect that you will also have to replace the heads eventually at $335 each (there are two) and the maintenance cart is around $70.

Take all of these future expenses into account when negotiating the price.

Another thing is to make sure the seller still has the 3" roll paper adapter for the roll paper holder (they can easily become lost and are expensive to replace).

I've had mine for about 3 years and overall it has worked much better than any of the 24" and 44" Epsons I've owned previously.

I've owned an ipf 9400 for about 7-8 years, and it's at about 90,000 sq feet and still working great-- at about 75,000 we had a problem with the FFC cable assembly coming loose and tearing, which was a very involved replacement (did it myself, bought an ipf 9000 assembly for about $150, luckily it was the exact same).  But in general the machines are great, and 5,000 is a pretty low number-

5197 m2 is nearly 56000 sq ft.

Whoops-- ignore me then.  That's a lot of mileage.  If it's in physically good shape, may be worth it, but something is bound to give soon...
