P900 vs P800?
« on: November 19, 2021, 07:48:57 pm »

One year after the release of the P900, what is the team’s opinion as to whether there is significant value to replace a still fully functional P800 by a P900?

Things I would consider in decreasing order of importance :
- printing quality on semi gloss and matte sheet media
- smooothnesd of operation on OSX ( typically through Image Print Black but Epson software also)
- reliability of paper loading
- cost of inks
- bulk

Thank you.

Cheers,
Bernard

I assume this means « keep your P800 »?

Keep it until you run it into the ground and it can't be fixed or parts/ink are not available. Just my opinion, of course! ;-)

I'm with Larry on this.
My P800 is doing just fine for me, so I'm not about to replace a sure winner which does everything I want quite reliably.

The Epson P800 is $2,407.00 on Amazon today - I believe that it shows that it's a valuable printer (Amazon charges a lot for hard to get items that they have in stock).

The P900 doesn't do ink switching, so you don't lose ink when switching from Photo Black to Matte Black (which you probably do when switching from semi-gloss to matte papers). In my opinion, it is a cheaper build than the P800 - downsized, but not ruggedly built. The ink is also a little more expensive - 82 cents per ml for the P900 vs. 73 cents for the P800.

I too have a fully functioning P800 and love it.. It's 100% reliable, and its prints on InkJetArt Ceramic Luster 25X17" cut sheets--YES, IT Supplies has them!--are simply gorgeous..  I'm keeping mine until it quits.

I'm with the others; keep the P800.

Check again, extremely unlikely unless it was used.  ;)
And that printer was released in 2015.

The profiteering comment was meant for the $2407 Amazon price.

Indeed, an awful price (even with Amazon points <g>).
It looks like finding new P800's isn't easy or if you can, they cost more than they should.
You can get a P900 for $1195 and free shipping at B&H photo.

The build quality of my P600 was good. That of my P900 is mediocre. Still having star wheel scratch issues with the replacement P900. When it prints without issues, the quality is great. If you have a P800 without star wheel issues, keep it!!
