Nikon Z9: fully electronic shutter and price
« on: October 30, 2021, 04:53:42 am »

The two most relevant characteristics of the new Z9 in my opinion are:
- Fully electronic shutter camera (sensor readout=1/270).
- Price: a more powerful and versatile body than the Canon R3 at a more affordable price

Wether the reason for the lowering price is the absence of mechanical shutter or a new Nikon 'follower' strategy, is yet to be seen.

This camera is very important for Nikons future and has to convince the pro shooter to stay with Nikon in the mirrorless era.. I guess they priced it as low as possible.

I was suprised to hear that only few lenses can make combined use of the VR inside the camera + inside the lens to achieve an even better VR.  There is still many developments going on, also with the AF-motors.

film to sensor
mechanical shutter to electronic shutter
optical EVF tot electronic EVF

I think we are there. A fully electronic camera

Next stop is rolling shutter to global shutter.

If I am not mistaken all the native full frame Z mount lenses equipped with VR can, right?

The pricing of the Z9 seems designed to appeal to both Dx users and D8x0 users.

Bernard

I thought not the 24-70 f2.8 but the new 100-400, the macro 105 f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8

Next stop is rolling shutter to global shutter.

The need for global shutter is rapidly disappearing because of these fast scan rates.

Except for flash sync speed!

Also I’m not yet convinced the Z9 is all that, call me whatever but the reviews I’ve seen have been all influenced.

I am ready to replace my current  mirror less system hence the interest. The A1 seems like the top of the heap but the Z9 is a contender if the revivers are not fluffing up it’s capabilities.

This is the mirrorless camera I’ve been wanting from Nikon! A high resolution do it all wilderness-worthy nail-pounding beast with Nikons excellent approach to haptics.  They couldn’t have designed a better camera for my range of needs. And I’m thrilled at the price coming in about a grand less than I was guessing. Bought a Nikon z 105 MC to celebrate the savings.* I also appreciate getting rid of the mech shutter, but the absolutely zero blackout during 3dtracking at 20 FPS is what really thrills me. The sensor dust cover is also cool. And I’m glad there’s no low pass filter.

*I say this tongue in cheek, but I did recently receive my copy of this lens and it’s a great example of Nikon Z glass design.

The Z 24-70mm f2.8 S is not a VR lens.
