Instead of this depressing stuff, let's talk about...Alzheimers
« on: October 27, 2021, 09:24:16 pm »

I've read in reputable sources that a diuretic drug called bumetanide may have a strong effect in preventing alzheimers. Why this hasn't become more broadly known, I don't know. Doesn't seem like a particularly dangerous drug, though if abused, I suppose it could be, just like celery, if abused. You'd think the government would be shouting this from the rooftops, but they aren't. The effects have been known for at least a couple of years. Apparently, the drug could be somewhat curative as well as preventive.

Alzheimer's is depressing, a friend nearby in his 80's is suffering from it. In the past year or so, I really see the effects but his wife tells me stories of behavior that is very said.
So is this news:

That's a pretty recent news release so it's not surprising that it isn't more widely known, at least in popular media. It might be very well known in specialist circles. It sounds like it is very early days in the research though, with mouse and in vitro studies.

Too late for the septuagenarians, but the Crisper technology (gene editing) may be available to fight Alzheimer cells ten years from now.

Quote
Researchers have begun to write CRISPR "programs" where actions are taken on multiple genes at once. This has already been done to turn stem cells into neurons -- the cells that make up the central nervous system. Imagine a treatment that could create new healthy cells to replace those that function improperly in someone with Alzheimer's or ALS.
