I think it would have worked better if you had included either all of both arches, or just the one that is shown completely here.

The Brave New World of "smart" phones. Love your shot though.

Well done, Russ. I like everything about your photo; it simply 'works'.

Thanks, Bob. That's what I thought. Eric disagrees and that's his privilege.

Yes, I agree. The shot is "obvious", everything is in the right place and interactions between different people ares perfect - it seems like an easy shot but it's not (a bit like figure skating  ;D )

Well done again, Russ.

I wasn't clear. I think it is an excellent shot (I should have started with that) but I meant to suggest that it could be even better.

I agree, Eric. But I've never seen a picture that couldn't be better -- even by HCB.

Pen-F, Frans.
I did not and never will criticize your photos or the equipment you use, Russ! I'm in awe of your work, seriously. My comment was about people sitting down for a meal and then have their noses in their phones, smart ones or not.

It's so annoying, Russ. HCB never once paid any attention to a single one of my criticisms!     ;)

Not a problem, Frans. I didn't think you were criticizing. I suspect that picture could have been shot with a good enough cell phone. But when I go out I always carry a camera. Long ago it was a Leica M4. Now it's either a Nikon D750 or an Olympus Pen-F, which in a lot of ways feels kind of like my M4.

And Eric, I'm sorry to hear that HCB never paid any attention.

Here's another one, Frans. Can you imagine inviting a girl this good looking to an intimate lunch and then both of you spending the time on your phones? Wow!

No, I can't. In the Brave New World it was drugs, in our world it's twice as bad: drugs and "smart" phones.

Very good photo, Russ. But I must deduct a point (see Prof. Eric's comment above).

Hi Rajan,

I’m always interested to hear your opinion because I truly respect the photography you do.

But, and this is a big but: I see very few people on LuLa doing street photography. I see a few doing what they think is street, but it’s rarely what the history of photography has defined as street photography. There isn’t any good definition of street photography in words. To know what it is you have to go back to its originators, the people who started doing it when the Leica first came out and we moved beyond tripods, inverted viewing screens, and covering your head to keep out the light while you focused. I made an attempt to define real street in words with https://luminous-landscape.com/on-street-photography/, but no definition in words really succeeds.

If you’re doing street photography you normally have about three seconds, often less, to frame, focus, and make your shot. Sometimes you’ll frame and focus and wait for the action to reach the point you want in your picture. In the end, you toss a vast number of failures for every success.

So, be careful when you criticize real street photography. What you see may not be exactly what you’d like to see, but if it gets its message across then it’s successful. And there’s always a message of some kind in street photography. If it’s good street, the message often is ambiguous. I talked about that and gave an example in http://www.russ-lewis.com/essays/OnMeaning.pdf.

In any case, I’ve been trying to show some real street photography by posting here. I suspect I’ve not been successful in getting the message across, but I’m going to keep trying, at least for a while.

Russ,

I depend on your posts here for examples of good Street photography.
I find it quite difficult to do well, so I tend to stick with landscapes and abstracts, which my slow brain can handle.

I think I have a couple of passable "streets," so I'll look for them and post, if I can find them.
