Buying a used Canon ipF 6400, any advice ?
« on: October 09, 2021, 08:18:44 am »

I have an opportunity to buy a used Canon iPF 6400 (for about 300 euros). I've used it in the past and I was quite satisfied with color prints. As I did not used that often I have some questions :

- can it load deckle edge paper easily ? I am printing on uncoated fine art paper sheets and would like to use it to produce larger ones.
- It needs to be calibrated from time to time, does it imply that paper profiles must be redone after calibration ?
- will the ink be discontinued (as I read it in another thread) ?

Thanks for any comment about this.

Here is some info. I wasn’t able to get parts or service or support for my 8300 so I got rid of it.
I believe the inks are about to expire also if they haven’t already. There are plenty of third party inks out there
But I don’t know if I would use them. You need to find out how old the print heads are. If you need to replace those they are not cheap. Any thing over a year or two old could be on their way out. You may not even be able to find reliable heads now, don’t know. Read the charts.

Thanks for this link. Not sure to understand well that the 6400 will have inks available till 12/2025.
I don't plan to use third party inks.
Concerning heads, the seller has changed one in 2020. I assume I will have to change the other one soon.

Thanks for the link to the ink information. One of my suppliers said that the 306 ink would be discontinued next year. This chart shows that it will be available until Dec. 2025. That's great news as my 8300 is now 11 years old and keeps printing every day. I've been tempted to buy a new Canon printer but it's hard to give up the easy to use 8300 print plug in and long lasting inks.

What they don’t tell you on that chart is how much the inks will  cost. But I’m with you, I’d rather have the 8300 than the ipf 4000.

The 8300, 8400, 6300 and 6400 all use the same heads. There are two and they cost about $350 each depending on where you buy them:

I've bought two of these several years ago and so far they still work.
