z3200 banding and strikes
« on: August 22, 2021, 03:39:22 am »

I love my z3200s but they're testing my patience this week. I've never had banding issues before but all of a sudden I'm getting banding on a set of prints I have that have large fields of dark blue. The banding shows up as horizontal bands that look reddish, alternating with the blue.

Prints that do not have the solid dark areas seem fine.

I've printed this same print hundreds of times over the years and never have seen this banding. My first thought was that a printhead had gone bad but the diagnostic image showed them to be fine and they are all fairly new. I ended up replacing 3 of them anyway.

I print these using the quality:normal setting because it's so much faster and they look fine usually. If I print them at high quality the banding goes away but I have terrible headstrikes which is an issue I've had repeatedly for years which I've usually been able to resolve by running humidifiers at a steady 60%. On a hot, dry day in LA, the headstrikes show up again. Switching to the normal quality has helped a lot and I've been running it that way for years.

At this point I don't know if I'm dealing with a hardware or software issue, and am running out of ideas (as well as deadline time). And I have two distinct problems that seem unrelated

Things I've tried:

1.creating new presets
2. cleaned drop detector
3. cleaned encoding strip
4. ran several of the advanced diagnostic images
5. paper advance calibration
6. adjusted paper advance calibration +100 and -100
7. cleaned the heads
8. unplugged, restarted

It might be a broken rear carriage bushing. It takes an hour or so worth of surgery to find out. if you're comfortable with that, it's not a big deal. Someone else here (Lundquist?) may have a less-involved diagnostic of which I'm not aware.
