Rodenstock HR Digaron-S 28mm or HR Digaron-W 32mm?
« on: July 23, 2021, 05:24:00 pm »

Ho Folks! I'm looking for some tips..
I own a IQ3 Trichromatic + WRS 1200 and a IQ250
I recently converted the 250 for IR photography.
Due to the crop of the smaller sensor I'm looking for a wider lens.
I bought a HR Digaron-S 28mm with the 70mm image circle.
The tilt options would be around 11mm, and when I'm using the IQ3 it's almost zero.
Can I better go for the 32mm Digaron-W.. (only 5mm difference) and have more options for the IQ3 back?
What is image quality wise the difference between both lenses?
I've seen some articles about color fringing on the 28mm digaron-s...
When I do IR photography would that create a huge problem?
If I go for the 32mm will the wider image circle have less fringing on the same position?
Thanks a lot!!

The tilt options on a 28mm HR (magenta colored band on lens) should not be limited on a 3100. Most tech cameras offer between 0 and 5 degrees of tilt and which ever back you use should not be a limiting factor.

The shift options on the 28mm HR will be limited due to the 70mm image circle. 5mm or less one direction. on the 3100.  And 8-10mm max shift one direction on a cropped sensor.

The 32mm HR-W (blue band on lens) has a 90mm IC. This you can get more rise/fall and shift. At least 12mm on shift on direction. 24mm total.

Both lenses are stellar optics the 28mm needs a CF for pretty much all exposures due to the need to correct the vignetting. 32mm offers more movements and is a potentially less flare prone lens.

Vieri’s in depth review covers this lens very well.

Hi Paul!

Super thanks for all the info, much appreciated!
What does CF mean? I want to use the lens in B&W or infrared mode only.

Will the magenta still be a problem? I will probably shoot around f 8-11..
I've read on the internet that vignetting will be solved in the higher apertures.

I own the 28mm, but I need to convert it to CAMBO mount.
The 28 was almost free, a 32mm will cost me 5K+
So if they're optically similar, my choice is simple.

Sorry. CF means center  filter.

I used the 28mm on the IQ260 and 3100 with an Arca tech camera. I always used the CF since the image really improves in regards to noise in post there is Not as much work to be done on the file. The center filter adds about two stops to 1 1/2 stops in the corners.

I don’t think Stopping down will assist much in removing the vignetting on the 28 without the center filter. At least it did not for me.

"Rodenstock HR Digaron-S 28mm or HR Digaron-W 32mm?"

To give my (belated) two cents.

Although not far apart with their focal length, Digaron-S 28mm and Digaron-W 32mm are very different lenses. The main difference is the design parameter as to coverage. Digaron-S has has a stated coverage of 70mm just covering 54x40mm ("645") while the Digaron-W 32mm has a stated coverage of 90mm going well beyond 54x40mm.

"So if they're optically similar, my choice is simple."

Practically speaking, the Digaron-S 28mm can't be used for any serious shifting or image stitching on the IO3; if extensive shifting or image stitching required/desired you will need the Digaron-W 32mm. This is why the heavy & expensive Digaron-W 32mm is such a desirable lens.
