Roll Paper Damage

Almost 50% of the roll paper I buy through Ebay has end-damage due to inadequate packaging or rough handling during shipping.  That bargain priced paper is not always a bargain.

A little ding on the end can easily extend through half a roll and result in dreaded head strikes.  What is your experience?

Part of the reason it might be on Ebay is it is a damaged second. Buy your good paper from a reputable dealer that will take returns if damaged.
I buy quite a bit of stuff from Ebay but no paper or ink supplies.

I've never bought paper through eBay, but I had similar experience with HP rolls purchased directly from the manufacturer (Brand Management Group). After I filed one too many return requests, the rep told me that they wouldn't honor the requests as long as I was buying individual rolls that would be shipped via UPS (I would buy 10 at a time and they would ship in the factory boxes. Between 1 and 4 would always be smushed at one end). After that I started getting palletized deliveries of 30 or 40 rolls, again directly from BMG.  I have to pay for a lift gate delivery since I don't have a loading dock, but in the 100+ rolls I've had delivered on a pallet I think only one had end damage.  It's well worth the few dollars per roll extra that the liftgate costs me.

Hah yeah the one factory boxed 44” HP roll I bought was also damaged at one end. No problem with Hahnemuhle. Must be a different style of roll supports at the ends.

Yep, the volume is the reason I don't use those papers as the dip into my profit margin would be significant. Fine stuff, but HP is reasonably priced and their Premium Matte is perfect for my very specific needs. 

I don't quite go through that many rolls  , but I've never had a damaged roll from Hahnemuhle, Canson or Breathing Color.

All my damaged rolls were HP papers.

Been buying Aurora paper from Red River for  years, never had any problems. Also quite a bit of HP canvas for several vendors, again never a problem.
