Z3100 costs without printing
« on: May 08, 2021, 10:18:03 am »

I am waiting for some parts to repair my z3100. In the meantime i thought to see what ink it uses without any printing.
As we know it maintains the printheads every several hours and uses some ink.
As i can see after a month of non use - the total ink usage is about 22 ml a month. Could be 5 more or less. Anyway about 12 € ink a month.
Electricity was about 40 € a year so in total 16 € a month to maintain the printer.
The Z3200 has a ventilator near the power supply that in contrary to the z3100 runs always. So it probably uses a little more electricity.

Interesting.  I shall have a look at my z3100, which sits unused most of the time.

It seems that the ink-levels are fairly vague estimates.  From the web-server help:

"The data provided regarding the total ink consumption are approximate. HP does not warrant the accuracy of such data; the average error in the total ink consumption can be up to +/-15% in about 95% of cases. The error percentage can be higher in the remaining 5% of cases. This is based on HP internal tests run in ambient conditions."

I’ll tell you one thing, I will never complain about Z printers wasting too much ink ( not that you are in this case you are just curious ).

These printers were designed by great engineers to save ink and not waste it in unnecessary cleanings and insane black ink purges. This is the exact opposite of Epson who has designed their units to consume as much as possible. That’s no accident.

The Hp ink carts face down and drain every drop and their cleaning mechanism uses as little ink as possible to keep nozzles clean. How do I know this ? The waste tank. I can go for many many years without replacing the spittoon. So long that I always forget how long it was. I mean you can go practically the life of the printer without replacing one.

On my Epson printers they need to be replaced or reset about about once a month if used a lot. You look in there and that’s a lot of ink. My Canon tank lasted about three times as long as the Epsons, ( their carts face down too )  but no where near the economy of my Zs.  The other thing I’ve noticed for many years about my Epsons is that once the ink levels go down about halfway, you start seeing more missing nozzles, or at least I do, and these require, you’ve got it, more ink. This must be because they are loosing pressure.  I’ve found when my carts are full I have practically no missing nozzles with this new head.

We complain a lot about HPs poor software support and other issues with the new ones, but I’ll never forget how good they have been in economy of use, both in head design and ink use. That’s good honest design.

John

I weight the cartridges before and after: Only; my balance has a 2 gram sensitivity; therefore i have to take more time to be exact.
Even without printing and without using ink the printer can serve as an automatic spectrophotometer-, but not now since the ESP( colorsensor) is the part i have to replace.

Wow!  Now that's geeky!  😊😊

I actually owned an i1 before I bought the z3100 (no Advanced Profiling Solution) so I was comparing profiles straight away and I've been using 3500 profiles made with the i1 for a long time now.  I couldn't get anywhere near the quality via the built-in spectro, compared to the i1, which was such a shame.  I really think they made a marketing error with the way they handled that. They should have made the max quality available across the board from the start.

Maybe you already read that  i bought the 'HP Advanced Profiling Solution"...  the colorimeter display2 that came with it stopt working after 2 years... and now only serves as a dongle.
The software was not supported after macOSX 10.6 !; But just lately i discovered i can do 2744 patch profiles with it on both the Z3200 and the Z3100 with my old computer.
So in the end i am happy I bought it.

update:
2 months not using the Z3100 loses 33 ml ink... so even less than i  thought earlier...
about 1.5 cartridge (130ml) , a year is about 100€ of ink a year ; with electricity about 140,- a year.
