Canon r5 back focusing - micro AF adjustment missing???
« on: April 23, 2021, 11:01:38 am »

I have a brand new Canon R5. I noticed a horrible back focusing with my 35mm 1.4 Mark I. lens.
I have tried to micro-adjust focusing but apparently there is no option for micro-adjust AF in the menu... ?????
Anybody facing the same problem????
Thanks!

It’s a mirrorless camera is it not? There is no menu item for micro adjusting focus because mirrorless focus on the chip so micro adjusting a lens is not needed or relevant.

If you are not hitting focus there must be a reason other than traditional back focus as could happen with DSLR cameras.

I see! I guess the problem is the lens or the lens adapter...

I really am not sure quite honestly. It could also be how the focus is set up. As in the focus mode and focus area.

You weren’t clear as to what equipment you’re using. If you’re using a legacy lens w/ Canon’s own EF/RF adapter on the R5 , check your manual because there may indeed be a [AF Micro Adjust] menu option.  If there is, this would ONLY be applicable to adapted lenses on Canon's proprietary adapter.

It is more likely, with an adapted lens, you’re seeing focus shift as the Canon focuses wide open and stops down at the moment of capture. This would be a function of lens firmware not your R5.

Finally, IIRC, Canon has settings under [lens aberration correction] , digital lens optimiser should be disabled w/ adapted lenses.

Edit:
If you're using 3rd party lenses and/or adapters - manual focus if problems persist.

That is not necessarily true for ALL mirrorless cameras. [AF micro adjust] certainly exists on Sony A7 series - it’s ONLY for fine tuning their proprietary adapters / legacy lens combos.
