Missing Photo?
« on: March 24, 2021, 02:39:58 pm »

I worked on an image and saved the final product, then posted it up on Facebook and elsewhere.  When I went to look for it today, it has dissappeared completely.  I have the Virtual copy that I worked on, but the final result has gone. Luckily I kept a copy outside of LR and was able to reimport the image.  Recently, this has happened to other images also. this bizzare behavior has me concerned.

Anyone else seen this or have an explanation?

You might try exporting the VC as a DNG, you may end up with a new document.

I worked on an image and saved the final product. . . .  When I went to look for it today, it has dissappeared completely.

Anyone else seen this or have an explanation?

The only times Lightroom has ever "lost" any of my files were when I was deleting adjacent images in the grid view or filmstrip, inadvertently included a photo I actually wanted to keep in the selection, and then clicked on Delete from Disk in the image removal dialog instead of just extracting the images' entries from the Lightroom database.  In other words, operator error.  Not a Lightroom bug.

I've done this a number of times.  Since the files I am working on are backed up to a remote server once a minute, I may rebuke myself for my "fat fingers" but I don't worry about losing anything.  But if I didn't have that back-up regime in place, I would probably make a habit of using the Remove from Lightroom option rather than deleting the source files.

I did consider this "fat finger" problem but am sure I did not delete the image accidentally.

Make sure you don't have any hidden selection criterium set.
I don't think you can loose an image and still have the virtual copy.

Could it be that the master and virtual copy were inadvertently stacked, with the VC placed on top? That would hide the master.

Use Explorer (Win) or Finder (Mac) to search for the exact file number on your drive(s).  I have to do this occasionally when I file something (not a photo) in the wrong place
