I wouldn't expect that much timber for a sparrow or chicadee, but a Great Blue is pretty strong.
I wonder if he plans to chop it into smaller pieces to build the nest. Perhaps that big piece is the underlying framework.

It is a very unusual shot.

Thanks for all of your comments.  I live by a Blue Heron rookery.  It offers me non-stop entertainment just watching them engage in their nest-building activity.
Normally, I go to the rookery around 4 pm each day.  The birds have unique flight paths as they gather nest-building materials.  Around 20% of these flight paths offer me a chance to take a properly lit picture. Most of the materials that the Herons are gathering are smaller than the branch in my shot.

The rookery is located in Cuyahoga National Park.  This park is a short drive from Akron and Cleveland Ohio.  Anyone interested in visiting this site then please let me know and I can provide more direction
to the rookery.
