Best panorama software for a flat panoramic sequence
« on: February 28, 2021, 06:35:52 am »

Which pano software do you think would work best for a flat panorama? i.e. a panoramic sequence obtained from a long flat wall moving the camera while trying to keep it perpendicular to the wall?

The place is a 50m long wall painted in a street with trees, cars and bikes close to the wall so it's impossible (and would also be suboptimum) to set up the camera at a fixed location and pan it around the wall:

The only real drawback is that in the main area there are actually two walls shifted with respect to each other (the lower wall is closer to the camera), so it's actually a 2-panorama exercise.
This is a quick Photomerge from 14 smartphone snapshots, the errors become very apparent:

For those interested, this mural entered some political controversia recently because the City Council considered it innapropiate (most figures are left handed women who fought for the rights of women or achieved some importat goals), and wanted to eliminate it, but local neighbourhood associations demonstrated and finally the mural will remain safe.

Regards

If i understand correctly, you want use your camera as a large flatbed scanner... ?

so multiple photos with different points of view taken at the same distance and height taken from the mural....

Correct. In this situation only linear stretching transformations over the images are needed, no need of reprojection (linear, cylindrical, spherical,...). It's a very straightforward case of panorama stitching, I just wonder which pano software is best at this task.

Microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor) has the capability of stitching “planar motion” images such as you case. It is free, so you might give it a try.

Thanks. But it doesn't seem to be available anymore, at least from MS site:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/product/computational-photography-applications/image-composite-editor/

Download ICE 2.0 -> 64-bit Windows

"We're sorry, this download is no longer available."

OK, got it from another source: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pr8czqgg2uh9lry/ICE-2.0.3-for-64-bit-Windows.msi?dl=0
Trying it.

How strange, it detects well the images and overlaps after setting it to 1 row - 14 columns layout, but it then stitches them vertically!

I managed to make MS ICE work with some of the images; for some others I have manually made the composite.

The result is still far from good but at least the portraits are fine.

If someone wants to give his own view, please find the source JPEG files here:

It looks good to me... and a beautiful mural painting indeed.

As a ptGUI user...  i would try ptGUI ;)
For me it is the most flexible program around for panorama's as far as i know. It is for me one of those programs so well made that it deserves it to be learned. ( like Photoshop )
You can use different lenses , mix vertical and portrait images and even different waypoints up to some degree...
If a stitch goes wrong ; you can manually change things till it works.
In this case- treating the images as scanned images- i would manually choose a long telelens ( 2000mm) and start from there...

I have always heard PTGUI is the best stitching software but I never tried it. Doesn't it have a native input planar projection option (eq. to focal length -> oo)? that sounds strange being the best software, there are genuine planar stitching applications around (large pieces of painting art, classical microscopy, picture scanning,...).

I was planning to repeat the pictures with the FF camera and a tripod on a cloudy day, but it seems that is not going to happen.

Today the mural woke up painted in black:

Just for fun. When looking for info. about the mural I found no quality online pictures of the entire wall, which was weird. So I thought it could be a good idea trying to document it with a reasonably high quality panorama.

PTGUI Pro offers that functionality, it's called "Viewpoint correction", and it allows to stitch images in a flat plane scene that were taken from different positions.

Definitely PTGUI.  The software is a marvel of programming by a chap that know what he is doing.
I've been using it since it first came out and he is constantly adding tools and new ways of thinking.

Of the computer full of image manipulation software that I have, his is the most intelligently put together, in my opinion.
