Subfolder creation not working

LR Classic v 10.1

I want to create a subfolder in a collection.  Right clicking brings up the dialog box but it does not show the folder I wish to select.  Even if I create it in a different location, I cannot click and drag to put where desired.  This  used to work fine but not now.  HELP

What OS, one or more drives, etc?

Using LR 10.1.1  on MAC OS 10.4.6

Catalog on the MAC,  Images on an external Drive

I want to create a subfolder in a collection.

When was this option added ? Version 6 doesn't allow creation of folders in collections, only the ability to create sets of collections which isn't the same thing.

It was never added - the original post is indeed confusing.

In the Collections panel, the equivalent to a folder is a Collection Set, and you can create "subfolders" by right clicking a Collection Set and creating further Collection Sets. You can't create them by right clicking a regular or smart Collection.

Equally the question might be about creating subfolders in a folder.

Attached is a view of a collection which has many subfolders that I created by Right clicking and then giving a name.

Why can't I repeat this in a different collection?   Restarting did not fix the issue.

No, that's a collection set which has further collections in it, not folders.
If you right click in a collection set you'll have the option to create another collection within a chosen set. You can't create a sub collection in just a simple collection, the top level needs to be a collection set.

It's important to understand that creating a folder within the folders panel creates an actual folder on the hard drive that any other programs can view and manipulate.
A collection is just a organisational element with Lightroom's catalogue structure that is only seen within Lightroom. It's an important difference and folder and collection sets have different icons to represent them.
