A few Birds shot at very high ISO
« on: January 25, 2021, 07:33:57 am »

Yesterday I had a nice day out at the National park............unfortunately due to the thick canopy the light was really not very good......most of these shots were taken at 1/160 f4 and ISO10k+
What do you guys do when the light is bad, stay at home or push the ISO as high as you can?

Well, in this case pushing the ISO had no noticeable effect on the high quality of the photos, so I'd say you did it right.

Those of us who recall pushing Fujicolor 800 color neg film 3 or 4 stops to cover indoor basketball in dimly lit gyms think that ISO10000 on a modern camera looks pretty darn great.

I shoot 9600 ISO regularly in dim light...looks good to me.

They're fine shots, Neil, and I agree with those who point out that there are times when you can't avoid pushing the ISO. It's also one of the great advantages of digital over film. You actually can do that.

And you certainly succeeded here. These are excellent, regardless of ISO.

If I can get results like those, sod the ISO.

Thanks for all the feed back guys...........When I first arrived at the location and got settled in, I switched on the camera and took a practice shot, I was like WTF, this is going to be a waist of time. Five minutes later the first bird arrived and took the picture (600mm 1/160 f4 ISO12800) On the back of the LCD it looked okay...............but then they always look good on the LCD until you get home, but this time it was fine.
Next weekend we are going to try another place near by that apparently the forest canopy isn't so dense ..............I will post up next week :)

I can only echo what the others have posted but those look terrific to me, especially with that high ISO. What gear was used and did you have to do a lot in post to get these fine results?

I shoot in Manual mode, set Aperture and Shutter and let ISO look after itself.
Usually I then denoise the high ISOs in DxO PL4 Deep Prime
BTW I find your images wonderful

Im using a Nikon D850 body with Nikon 600mm f/4E FL ED VR lens. PP usually takes 5 minutes max on each picture..... ACR and Topaz Di Noise
