Elon, Metol, etc.
« on: January 17, 2021, 02:47:03 pm »

Found some B&W chemical components used to make developers I'd saved from decades ago recently. Containers unopened since maybe 1973, stuff seems to be still viable... never wet, exposed to air.

Anyone interested in them PM me for a list & give me your location. I'd rather not just dump the stuff I can dump into the sewer.

I'm in SW Wisconsin if that helps any. Hopefully this stuff could be shipped UPS Ground w/o too much hassle.

The developer stuff needs more careful handling, probably haz-mat now....

All Kodak brand: Balanced Alkali, Potassium Carbonate, Rapid Selenium toner, Potassium Ferricyanide, then some unopened Neofin ROT (red) developed in glass vials...

The Potassium Ferricyanide is extremely dangerous. You should check on whether your locality has a drop-off location for hazardous chemicals. Our city has one once a month. I am taking mine there for the next open time.

I think the other chemicals are relatively harmless, but you might want to check with a hazardous chemical drop-off site, since they should have a list of what the baddies are.

Good luck!

Potassium ferricyanide is dangerous only if it comes in contact with concentrated strong acids.  Otherwise it is pretty harmless - is one of the 2 main ingredients in cyanotypes, considered to be fairly safe process.  By all means though, for disposal it is advisable to take it to chemical disposal site with proper labeling to reflect the content.

Thanks for the clarification, Niranjan.

No problem...been working a lot on learning cyanotypes lately so I familiarized myself with limits of this particular "cyanide" - no high heat (over 200C) and no concentrated strong acids like sulfuric, hydrochloric etc.  Same applies to potassium ferrOcyanide which is also found in traditional darkroom.

An interesting case of someone who tried to commit suicide with a spoonful of potassium ferricyanide and lived:
