The second boat makes it less a cliché...

Cliché or not, I like it a lot! As for the second boat, it's classic vs modern - a good contrast.

+1 Good shooting, Jeremy. Never ignore something like this because it seems like a cliché. If it turns out in retrospect to be one you always can can it.

Good catch, Jeremy.
The question in my mind is this: Is he at just the right height to get under the bridge without losing his hat, or will he have to duck just a little?

He had to duck. I suspect he's done it before.

Or maybe he watched his deceased father fail to duck just once...

What is the matter with you guys, didn't you watch Bug Bunny when Snagglepuss took the Gondola down the river and the sign said, right before he hit the bridge, "Ducka yo head Lo La Bridge i da..."

The best way to deal with a cliche is to reinvent it. Classic visual communications. It's taught every day in art schools. When students' eyes are opened to this, magic can happen—a powerful way to make a compelling statement.

To make it a cliche, you'd have to clone out the white boat (and the reflection), raise the gondolier just enough so that his hat isn't tangential to the line on the arch and clone in some top to bottom LHS detail so the boat isn't so close to the edge of frame.
As it is, it's a great photograph.
