Apple ProRAW, DNG & Lightroom
« on: December 16, 2020, 04:31:36 pm »

Apple has just released ProRAW for iPhone12 Pros.  Halide has put out a complex article, 'Understanding ProRAW' on its blog.halide.cam site.  The point is made there that ProRAW images are DNG, but in the article there is reference to DNG 1.6 which Adobe has recently released.  Lightroom accepts DNG, but will it accept 1.6 and if so, does it handle it in all its nuances?  I ask this because the Halide article seems to indicate that Apple has added some tweaks.

There seem to be some references to LR updates coming to make best use of ProRAW.

I know that ProRAW can be edited in the iPhone12 Photos app, but I prefer to edit iPhone images in LR running on a laptop or desktop.  I rarely have need to edit on the phone, and if I want to share an image the unedited JPEG usually suffices as my audience for instant copies is not that critically minded!! I understand ProRAW images contain JPEGs.

This is all somewhat confusing for me as I am a bear of little brain (like Paddington).  Do I just park what I consider to be ProRAW keepers from my 12Pro until I know LR can do them justice, or is it OK to use the latest LR I have, Classic v10.1.

I am sure some of the expert members of this Forum will have a view worth reading.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Some of Apples processing is proprietary, that much I know.

I am not sure if LR imports them yet, but I would "park" them safely and doubt you'll be waiting long. Of course, there will be differences between what different programs will be able to do with them.

Here's the link to that article https://blog.halide.cam/understanding-proraw-4eed556d4c54

The current, shipping version does import ProRAWs from my iPhone 12 Pro. The way it deals with profiles is a bit odd, I'm working on clarity but there's an option for Embedded Profile in that DNG that I can pick. So if you have an iPhone 12, want to capture raw as DNG, LR can deal with them but again, how well it does compared to some of the proprietary processing Apple has in Photo's?
