Photo Mechanic Plus
« on: December 04, 2020, 02:30:46 pm »

Photo Mechanic Plus is now available (https://home.camerabits.com/tour-photo-mechanic-plus/). Free trial is available (I haven't tried it yet). I have generally used Lightroom to manage my image collection, but I do wonder if anyone on this forum has tried the new version of PM Plus (includes an image database), and whether it offers advantages over LR for image management.

I'm sure it will be reliable and quick - after all, they've been working on it for over a decade. Like PM, it'll be efficient at entering metadata, but it is so recent that your best bet is going to be to try it for yourself.

Yet why would one want to catalogue your images with a second program that doesn't show their adjusted appearance? While I think PM+ can read LR crops, you won't see other corrections made in LR like dust spots or WB, or where for example you lifted the shadows in a underexposed shot, made lens and persepctive corrections, made a shot B&W. When there are apps which combine adjustment and management, I don't see much space for one that only does the latter.

I tried it quickly since i am looking voor a program to cul my photos that will replace Mediapro se.
Am looking for small folder related catalogues not one big one, so it is not for me.
Also they should hire some person that makes the layout more look like 2020 instead of 1990...

I use Photo Mechanic (plus) ... stopped using Lightroom over a year ago actually quit Adobe altogether for some time now since other software (affinity, dxo pl etc.) are plenty for me. I'm happy with it and don't look back. Catalog saves me a lot of time vs lightroom's version, YMMV.

I trialed it vs lightroom for a week or two and then purchased it.  I have no regrets.  Used PM back in my brief photojournalism editing stint more than a decade ago, and it's only gotten better since then.  As a cataloging/DAM program, it's just as blazing fast as it needs to be.

Would greatly benefit from more thoughtfulness around keeping updated versions of edited files (e.g. 20200811_RandomShoot_A.RNW 20200811_RandomShoot_A.JPG 20200811_RandomShoot_A_DXO.TIF 20200811_RandomShoot_A_DXO_Affinity.TIF should all be grouped together into a single thumbnail with a + icon to expand the different edited versions).  Beyond that, it's pretty perfect.

Could even SFTP to Backblaze or similar via Couchdrop....

PM Plus seems to be on it's intro sale right now.  Not sure what final pricing will be, but given PM's track record I view it as a long-term investment and a bargain compared to Lightroom.

or fast raw viewer...
https://www.fastrawviewer.com/

my favourite since Media Pro died for fast culling. ( not perfect, but getting better all the time and cheap.
It also has liberated me tot shoot only RAW, since they also have released Raw preview extractor...
...
and I use neofinder for archive ... and better search.
both are really well made programs- neofinder far more refined...
