I recall reading about "gesture" in an image (was it Jay Maisel who coined that?). Much of what you say about a successful image seems to be whether it has "gesture" (in that sense) or not. At any rate, I have never bought into the stark, rigid lines between genres. For example, in Goa one often comes across a shrine or a chapel ensconced in a forest or a rural setting. The scene is part landscape, part culture, part religion, part...you get the idea. It makes no sense to put a label on it.

I'm not really as rigid as I probably sound on genres, Rajan, but I do think genres make life easier. Gesture certainly is one thing that enters into meaning in street photography, but it's far from the most important thing.
