Have I Missed Anything?
« on: November 17, 2020, 08:30:53 pm »

For the past year & half I've been diving down the rabbit hole of wet plate/collodion photography.  Sometime using a 4x5 Chamonix but since March have mostly been using a Kodak 2D 8x10 with pre-1865 lenses.  I only photo outdoors, and that's more difficult than I imagined.  For starters I have to coat the plate, shoot it, and develop it all within about 15 minutes.  Next, the developing has to be done in the dark (under red light.)  That means I need to take a portable dark box along in addition to the chemicals.  Finally the chemicals, developer in particular, must be kept as close to 68 F degrees as possible.  Not easy when the temperature is well below freezing or around 95 F!  Since wet plate is sensitive only to UV and blue spectrum light, you can't really meter it.  You have to guess exposure, develop, and make exposure correction on the next shot.  It takes me about an hour to make a successful photo.  I've only been doing tin types so far, which are positives.  I have the capability to make negatives on glass but so far haven't.  After 15 months I'm starting to make some successful images.  A couple of weeks ago I hiked my 4x5 and supplies down into a valley to photo a waterfall.  I've mostly concentrated on learning wet plate, but have been shooting a few dry plates as well.  I've used my Nikon D850 a few times this year too. Wife and I love to travel and usually take about four nice trips every year, but we're both too nervous about plane rides this year.  We have taken several "safe-cations" to some very desolate areas--western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming and Montana, southwestern North Dakota.  No tourists go there, mostly see antelope and Angus out there.  I like to photo abandoned churches and Western landscapes and got some nice photos.  It gave us a nice break.  We ended up spending a LOT of time together for days at a time.  That was OK as we're best friends.

So, what happened to Rob C.?  Looks like he disappeared back in June.  I hope he's OK.

Rob is ok. Just a bit tired of LuLa, as am I, I guess.

Rob's still out there. I exchange an email with him from time to time. The most recent was ten days ago. As Slobodan pointed out, he got really tired of LuLa. I can understand that. The only problem is that the alternatives seem even worse. There are a few people on LuLa who make being there worthwhile. Just stay away from the Bear Pit.

I've had enough hateful political stuff to last me the rest of my life.  As for Rob, I'm very happy to hear he's OK.  He's one of my favorite guys!  I love the little stories he would write.  By my nature I love to roam and after my kids were grown and out of the house it gave me some real freedom.  The epidemic has completely curtailed our international travel, and most long distance travel for that matter.  We've stuck wandering the Northern Plains to satisfy our itch.  There is still plenty to see!  The past few months I've seen things in South Dakota I didn't know about even though I've lived here for three decades.  The northwest corner of my state is hundreds of miles of western prairie landscape, but we came across a pine forest on a long series of buttes we've never seen before.  They are a remnant of the last ice age, the Laurentide Ice Sheet.  I spend most weekends wandering about the deserted areas looking for "retired" churches, abandoned ranches, and ghost towns.  I photo these with 100+ year old lenses and large format.  Below is a photo I took last weekend of a house in the abandoned town of Esmond.  Note the left wall is pulling away and the entire structure is being held up by the two trees.  This is a 4x5 dry plate; lens was a c.1910 240mm Dagor.  Exposure f16, 3s, ISO 25.

HI Kent, I lived in Rapid City for a couple years after I came back from Korea in 1954. Used to fly out of the base, and occasionally I used to drive to Great Falls, Montana, where 29th Air Division headquarters was located. We owned a house on the west end of town, and sometimes used to drive a dusty road up into the Black Hills on weekends. It's an interesting area. I suspect some of the houses now falling apart were still in use in those days. We had a little creek running through our back yard, and I suspect our little house got wiped out in the '72 flood.

Welcome back.

I'm saddened that many contributors here have left: it is to the detriment of the forum. The reasons are many but certainly the divisive nature of the political threads have not helped. I'd love to see the return of those who have contributed photographic knowledge, talent and images.

Politics is what politicians and media elites use to divide and manipulate us for their benefit.  It's our hobbies and common interests that counter them and bring us together.

That, although I didn't express it, was among my motives for confining politics to a single thread: it's so much easier to ignore it.

I’m glad to hear Rob C is okay. I did wonder.
I too have dipped into the political threads from time to time. Even commented a few times. But they are poison and like a lot of social media, can leave you feeling angry and irritable.

Photography is much more fun.

As a matter of interest what other photography forums have people found interesting?

For myself I've discovered podcasts which make an entertaining addition to daily exercise during these socially distanced times.

For me, none. The category itself has become uninteresting. Just like political bickering.

The new site of Kevin has some interesting content.

The forum is taking off slowly but it's getting there. Moderation is top notch! ;)

I love those Collodion images btw. Would love to have the chance to see the plates in the flesh, they are always much nicer than any scan you can make of them. That is really to me the main value of the technique, on top of producing images it produces unique objects.

Cheers,
Bernard

And yet here you are on a photographic forum bickering over politics.

Yes. Those guys over there are more infectious than Covid, and I let myself be sucked into their bickering vortex ;)
