Catalog Corruption After Migrating To New HD (Mac)
« on: September 27, 2020, 06:05:06 pm »

Using current LR version, and after migrating Catalog and Images to new and larger capacity HD, life has been miserable.

Catalog and all image file maintained on external HD, as they have neon since LR v1. Working the sway for years, upgrading hD as needed when running out of space. Th erect move to larger HD is nothing new for me.

After running out of HD space on prior 6TB drives, each drive representing a redundant backup, I moved Catalog and Image content to new 12TB drives. The drives are formatted to APFS. This method of moving into larger drives is as I've done many times before.

The new 12TB drives are OWC-branded enclosure, and the new drives are connected by either USB 3, or FW 800, depending on the system being used. On each of my 4 Mac machines, various iMac and MBP units, the catalogs work, and then they don't - stating LR has encountered a problem. Attempts to repair catalogs rare work. The unifying feature of the complaint is the new 12TB drives. Makes no difference, near as I can tell, if I'm running a High Sierra system via TW800, or a Catalina USB 3 connection.

Are LR users having difficulty moving to larger capacity drives? Other thought for observations?

Many thanks,

Several times, also from my NAS back to windows 10 direct copy.
Seems with your pod there is a problem or an incompatibility with databases like the SQLite used by Lightroom.

I've had problems with OWC enclosures and no longer use them.  Although my current year working catalog is on SSDs everything from 2018 back is on a 12TB drive, as are my print ready images.  Both internal on a Win desktop.  No issues.  I've recently added a pair of external 16TB drives and centralized a lot of files on them.  They are not yet in my catalog but no issues with them, and I have 12tb drives in a NAS that are working well.

I'd suggest moving the drives to a different enclosure, even a dock, to test them independently.

I have had no problems when using OWC external drives which I used for several years with a MBP. As my library grew I moved to a Mac Pro and gradually added then swapped out HDs so that until recently I had my image files on three 6TB internal HDs. I just moved to a new Mac Pro. I simply copied the folder with the LR catalog files from the old Mac Pro onto a USB drive and then plugged that drive into the new computer. I renamed the library and the ancillary files consistently since LR had added a -2 a couple of times to the previous names on upgrades.
When it came to moving the three 6TB of data I pulled each HD successively out of the old Mac Pro and connected them to the new Mac Pro using an external dock (sold by OWC - I call them V'ger drives being an old Trekkie as the older dock was called a Voyager). When I booted LR on the new Mac Pro it instantly recognized the old drive and using LR I copied the data onto new drives inside the new Mac Pro (two 16TB drives to allow some room for more growth - they are in the two-drive enclosure sold as an accessory for the new Mac Pro). It took about a week to move all the data. I only did it while I was next to the computer in case of a power outage (used a UPS as well). I moved either whole years at time (10-15 year old data) or folders containing 10 to 20 K images within each annual folder. These smaller chunks took from an hour to about 3 hours each to transfer. The new drive dock is USB-C not Thunderboldt-3.
The upshot is that LR can easily handle 16TB drives so this should not be your problem. Did you move the files within LR? This is slower than using the OS but will keep LR from losing them.
