How Long to Scan a Large Target with i1 Photo Pro 3?
« on: September 12, 2020, 02:18:34 pm »

I am considering purchasing i1 Photo Pro 3 to make my own profiles.  I made some profiles about 10 years ago with the previous hardware/software version from Xrite and recall it being very laborious and time consuming to scan the targets.  Wondering if the latest instrument makes the scanning faster and more foolproof.  Can anyone comment on how long it takes to scan 1000 patches? 2500 patches?  Is it faster than the old instruments?

Thanks.

The ipro3 is somewhat faster than an ipro2, but on the whole not significant.
I use 2273 patches, printed on 4 sheets.
Key is to make the patches not too small, i use 8.5mm square. This to eliminate scan errors.
And to let the prints dry overnight, preferably 24 hrs or so.

After enough experience scanning, this process gets faster and easier and the error checking is quite good. Meaning one person's time scanning 1000 patches can vary from another.
More patches isn't necessarily better. The patch set Bill Atkinson created is superb and isn't overkill.

Are you talking about the 1728 patch set or something larger?

PS It would still be helpful if someone who scans manually can give an estimate of how long it takes even though there may be a lot of variation.

I'm speaking of Bill's patch set which has 1728 patches.
PS, it varies based on patch size and experience.

The I1Pro 2 requires 2 scans over the same row (back and forth) for M1 and M2, The I1Pro 3 requires only one scan for each row for all three M's.

Well, since no one else will answer your question, I’ll jump in. I use 2273 patches on four sheets and read them with an i1Pro 2 using the out and back method Doug mentioned. It takes about 10 minutes. As Andrew points out, YMMV. But that’s how long it takes me.

Thanks.  Even if I am a lot slower the time will be reasonable.  I recall taking quite a long time when I did it over 10 years ago.  Hopefully either I or the instrument have improved since that time.  ;)

Scanning 1000 patches takes about 3 minutes if you use the zebra ruler with the i1 Pro 3 standard aperture.
