Printing problems with Awagami Unryu thin paper
« on: August 25, 2020, 09:28:13 am »

Hi, Any ideas on the following? I am printing with an Epson SC-P600 on Awagami Unryu thin, using the ICC profile from Awagami (for this printer). All is well with A4 prints. With A3+, colors start to bleed and smudges are all over the place. Your help will be much appreciated. Best,  Jan (Amsterdam)

I wonder if you have printed on the back?

Dear mcrepsej, I wish I had but alas. By now, I have the same issue with yet another Awagami paper: Murakumo Kozo select: A4's are okay, A3+ has colours bleeding and smudges. Best,  Jan

Have you tried dialling in a greater paper thickness value in the driver? As your medium is very thin, some kind of paper curling effect in the printer could lead to smudges.

Changing platen gap could also help.

Finally I would test trimming down the sheets to A3 to see whether there is some other transportation issue.

Good luck!

Dear Michael,

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried different paper thickness settings, to no avail.
I have not tried the platen gap setting, but it would surprise me if the A3+ needed another setting than the A4.
It might be a transportation problem, though it does not look like it.
Right now, I am talking to the people of Awagami in Japan, I will report on their feedback.

Does the P600 print driver allow you to reduce the ink load (I don't have a P600), sounds like the paper might be cockling under the ink load.

Dear Colleagues,

Thanks very much for your reactions. By now, I have found out what went wrong.

It has been said more than once at various places in this forum: most problems with printers
such as Epson's SC-P600 and the like, are due to user errors. I am embarrassed to say that
my  problem is yet another illustration of this point.

What I did: I am used to feeding all my A3+ papers (Hahnemühle: Baryta, Pearl, Canson: Etching Rag, Baryta2, etc.)
into my SC-P600 printer by means of the Front Poster Board option. For all these papers, all of which are 0,3 mm thick or more,
this has always worked perfectly. For Awagami Unryu thin, which is 0,13 mm thick, it did not.
It led to the colour bleeding and smearing mentioned in my original post.

What I should have done (and ultimately did after all): I should not have used the Front Poster Board option
for feeding the Awagami Unryu thin paper into the printer. Instead, using the Front Fine Art option works perfectly well.

So "I made a learning", after all.

Sorry for wasting your time and thanks very much, once more,
for your feedback, much appreciated!
