Last evening 8/8/20, sitting on the deck with an adult beverage and watching the sun set on the red rock.

Wowsers, David.  That's your deck?  Pretty nice!  I can feel the silence.  Beautiful image!

I long for some desert, forbidden to me this year by some tiny life form whose name will not be mentioned.

Thank you, Peter, Eric. But Peter, not a life form... a parasitic machine. Desert vistas: good for the soul.

Thanks, Alan, the Verde Valley Arizona in Cottonwood. That's Sedona over by the red rock.

That's what I need, Peter!

My wife I toured that whole area when we spent three days in Sedona. https://goo.gl/maps/8QHM2GCSqevdPP3a8

We also hit the main SW parks in UT AZ and NM including Zion, Bryce, GC, Canyonlands, Monument Valley, Arches, Capitol Reef, Four Corners, and Red Rocks during the rest of the 16 day trip.  It was really great.

That's a great shot Peter.  Looks like a wonderful place to camp.  Unfortunately, I'd never get my wife to camp since we've been married, only before. :)  We stayed in some motel in Moab nearby Canyonlands.  Inside this Flickr folder are four shots of Canyonlands including Green River and Dead Horse Point.  Where did you camp?

Alan: Here is the KML file to locate on Google Earth the site of my image from Canyonlands NP.  I'm not sure you use the KML file in GE, but

Lat and Long are
<longitude>-109.6684437385163</longitude>
         <latitude>38.18126268779499</latitude>

It's BLM land, just outside the park.  Zero services, of course.  Just a few spots right off the highway and easy to access with any vehicle.

Peter,  I added your coordinates to the tour we took from the Hotel in Moab through Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point.  Yours is the bottom last destination with the red dot.

Great shots, David...our storms start late afternoon and it's rather fun to watch the rain march across the lake until it reaches my house then it it is time to head inside because these storms come with some ferocious lightning.

I love geography. I simply found the location on Google Earth.  Hovering your mouse pointer over the location displays the lat/long at the bottom of right corner of the screen.

Yes, you nailed it.  That's where I camped.  I've been there several times over the years.

That image pre-dates my current cell phone, which geo-tags images with the precise location.  Before, I had to rely on memory and map reading. It's effortless now.

I originally planned to take that drive to the end of the road. I think that area of Canyonlands is called Needles.  But it would have eaten up too much time on our way from Monument Valley to Moab.  So we skipped it.  Of course by then, when I would point out these beautiful new locations to my wife, she was already responding along the lines of, "What, more rocks?"  So we skipped Needles, continued to Moab, and grabbed a pizza.
