Epson Print Layout
« on: July 01, 2020, 05:46:21 am »

I haven't used epson Print Layout for a while, since I upgraded to Mojave on my iMac (Late 2015/17,1).  Tried it today to print some BW. The app starts, but I can't load images or select anything (printers, anything) from the drop down menus. Essentially it's frozen.  I tried it on my old MacBook Air running Sierra.  It works there.  Tried re-installing, re-booting, etc. nothing.   I print to an Epson P800, which works perfectly from Lightroom.  Any suggestions?

Same here on Mac Pro 2019 and Catalina. I think it is an abandoned from Epson  Mac OS app.

Runs fine on this end under Catalina.
You cannot load TIFF with compression which IMHO is a bug. I've informed Epson of this and I don't think they will address it.

Does it work with LZW compression. Lots of programs don't work with tiffs with ZIP but I'd be surprised if they didn't support LZW as that's older an more compatible in tiffs.

It’s able to load TIFFs with LZW or no compression but not TIFFs with Zip compression. It should. Here's a list I complied of products which do:
Apple ColorSync Utility
Apple Safari
Apple’s Photos
Apple Pages
Apple Keynote
Apple Preview
Apple’s Notes
Adobe Lightroom
Adobe Photoshop CC
Adobe Acrobat CC
Adobe InDesign CC
Adobe Muse
Capture 1
Affinity Photo
Graphic Converter 9
Qimage One
MS Word
Evernote
ScreenFlow
DxO PhotoLab 2

Since Epson Print Layout doesn't include any output sharpening... any suggestions on the best way to do this before importing a file? It seems like Epson is raising the profile of this software in their marketing materials for the new P700/900 printers.

Of course it should. Reasonably recent apps support Zip tiffs which is good as Zip results in a smaller size. But some apps, especially from decades ago, did not support any compression other than LZW which was the original tiff compression.

Amazing that a new Epson utility would not support Zip tiffs. Must of used an ancient code base.

Since I use Luminar 4 & Affinity 1.8.3, both of which have no printing module, I use Epson Print Layout for my P800. I've had no problems with Catalina. However, the only way I can get output sharpening is when exporting TIFFs to my desktop from the editors and then dragging them onto Epson Print Layout. I've communicated to both application about using EPL as a plug-in until they create their own printing module and their response is " thank you, we will look into it" . When Apple supported Aperture, it was so much simpler.
