Template setting

Asking the experts of CP1 here about what the right setting of the template in the print module. While I was playing with the print setting I lost the image in the navigator window ( it became blank grey screen) and then I can not print. What is the purpose of the template? What is the right setting. I normally print them to A4. Thank you.
