"Some of the application components are missing from the Application directory..." Again, I get this error only when trying to open a TIFF from Lightroom Classic into Photoshop. I am running the latest PS and LR upgrades, PS 21.2.0, LR 9.3, on a 2013 Mac Pro with Mojave 10.14.6, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD. I can open both LR & Photoshop just fine. The error occurs when I try to open a TIFF image from Lightroom Classic into Photoshop via the "open original." I can open a RAW image (Sony A7RIV) from LR as a smart object into PS and into PS2020. I can open the TIFF image by going to PS and using the open command and navigating to the image. My workflow is to work on the RAW image in LR, import it into PS, usually as a smart object, work on it in PS, save it as a TIFF to LR. When I'm ready to print, I go to LR and open the TIFF file to prepare to print it in PS. That seems to be where the problem lies.

I have reinstalled PS, LrC, and Creative Cloud, I shut down and reinstalled as well. This issue has been around for years in various forms. I've had it before but it would eventually disappear. I searched with Google and in the Adobe Community forum and there's nothing relevant current. I assume there's something buried in some preference file somewhere in LrC or in PS. I have the same app setup on my 2016 Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. and have never had a similar problem whatsoever with the MacBook. First world problem for sure, with the pandemic, but frustrating nonetheless. Thoughts would be welcome.

What order? Always install Lightroom first, then Photoshop.

"The error occurs when I try to open a TIFF image from Lightroom into Photoshop via the "open original."

So.... you're in PS and and you're trying to open a TIFF file that's in LrC???

I'm confused.

If I have a file in LrC and I want to go to PS I usually execute a "Edit in Photoshop" from LrC.

Thanks Andrew, but it did not work. I uninstalled both LrC and PS and reinstalled, LrC first then PS.

I then opened both programs, went to LrC, selected a TIFF file, went to "Photo", "Edit In," "Edit in Photoshop 2020," "Edit Original," and then... got the ..."Some of the application components are missing from the Application directory.."
Again, with RAW files, no issue, I select a RAW (ARW) file, go to "Photo," "Edit in Photoshop 2020," or to "Open as Smart Object in Photoshop," and the file opens in PS.

Thanks Ron, I may not have been clear. I do the same as you said, "I usually execute a "Edit in Photoshop" from LrC." If the file is a TIFF, I get the "Some of the application components are missing from the Application directory.." box. My sequence is detailed in the above to Andrew.

Further thoughts are welcome,

Best,

Eric

Error on only TIFFs?

Thanks Andrew, Yes, only on TIFFs. Sony ARW RAW files open up just fine from LrC to PS either as Smart Object or as regular PS file. My usual practice is to open the ARW into PS, then save it as a TIFF.

Have you tried to open the TIF directly in Photoshop?

PSDs or JPEGs more specifically (rendered not raws)?

Hi John, Thanks, yes, if I open PS and navigate to a TIFF file, it will open. The problem is going from LrC to PS. LrC RAW files open, LrC TIFF files do not, eg they display the error message.

Hi Andrew, Not exactly sure what you mean by "PSDs or JPEGs more specifically (rendered not raws)?." I have not used PSD files for years and essentially never use JPEGS except for the rare iPhone photo. I pretty much stick with the uncompressed RAW from the Sony A7RIV and the processed TIFF files

Going raw to PS is quite different than going rendered image (TIFF/JPEG/PSD) to PS so I'm wondering if this is a TIFF only issue or not.

What do the more-Mac-based folk think of the last post in this thread? https://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/threads/application-components-missing.28343/

Launch Services Database isn't new at all and yes, it can get hosed which is why there are useful utilities that can rebuild it. I use Cocktail to do so and it runs automatically for me every week. Another thing to try is to restart in Safe Mode (reboot with shift key down), let the process go until you can get to the Finder, then reboot normally. A lot of similar functionality take place doing so. This can also be done via Terminal but that's the most 'difficult' of all the processes for most users.

So might such a cleaning utility, whichever one it may be, be relevant to the OP's problem? All other Google searches about the problem seem to be about re-installing, but this one struck me as an interesting outlier.

It is certainly worth a try. No harm in rebuilding the services.
What I saw on the page you pointed to was:
Anyway, I used CleanMyMac 3 to repair the launch services database, and the problem is gone. I have no idea how the database gets corrupted or why uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop didn't fix it, but everything is working fine now.
I absolutely would not expect a reinstall of the application to have any bearing on this service; it's not for Adobe to touch.

In my experience, the only reason I would have a tiff in LR is because I have already edited it in PS and it has been "sent" back to LR. If I want to edit it in PS again, I would certainly want to include any LR adjustments I had made. So why no choose "Edit with LR Adjustments" and see if that fixes your problem. If there are no LR adjustments, this would be the same as choosing Edit Original.

In my experience, the only reason I would have a TIFF in LR is because I want to have it in my DAM, I want to easily locate it there to make a print or slide show or web gallery or export to a size and color space with a robust sharpening workflow with 1 or 1000 other TIFFs.

Not exactly, as it will create a new tiff file.

Thanks to all who responded. Today it all fell into place. It helps that I'm a retired bum with lots of time on my hands thanks to the Corona virus.

I uninstalled EVERYTHING, Creative Cloud, Lightroom Classic, and Photoshop. I then shut the computer down (a 2013 Mac Pro "trashcan"), not a restart, a shutdown. I then restarted and reinstalled each program, starting with Creative Cloud, the Lightroom Classic, the Photoshop. When I hit the previously feared Command-E to open a TIFF from LrC, IT OPENED in PS! Then to check further, in the Finder, I right clicked on a TIFF file, and chose "open with" and instead of three versions of Photoshop (which I don't have), it just indicated Photoshop 2020. I guess the faulty launch services database got repaired. My plan to rebuild launchservices in Onyx was not needed.

A word about my workflow, if anyone cares, and an explanation of why I keep my TIFF's in LrC. I suspect many people do what I do or a minor variation.

I import my RAW ARW images into LrC; I then develop them in the develop module as best I can. As we all know there's a LOT that can be done in LrC. But I still always use Photoshop for my "Master" images, the ones that might see a frame and the wall. I take the file into Photoshop as a Smart Object (Thank you Charlie Cramer-he teaches this so one can go back to ACR and the more malleable RAW file any time and do further work that might help the image). I then do my thing in Photoshop, and save the file as a "Master" TIFF with all the PS layers back into the LrC database. The "Master" designation enables easy searches for significant images. This way, when I'm either ready to print, (I print in Photoshop using Focus Magic for output sharpening, again, Thanks Charlie) or decide it needs more work, I open the TIFF back into Photoshop.

This has been frustrating but I hope it might be helpful to someone else who finds themselves in a similar conundrum.

Pretty much my workflow too. Need to be able to find the TIFs and that's what the catalog is for.

I am assuming you Lightroom Classic and Photoshop are latest rental version (Creative Cloud subscription)?

ADOBE (using their usual nastiness) have prevented a tiff that is not supported by an older version of Photoshop to be opened from LR to PS.  I have CC installed on two main desktops and due to licensing issues use Lightroom 6/Classic on a laptop with Photoshop CS6 and while LR6 will open and process certain .NEF files (Nikon Raws) the PS CS6 being older cannot be passed these files either as a smart file, .PSD, 'Tif or any other way without a dramatic reduction in quality or not at all.

I also expected to save acceptable (LR version supports the particular RAW file) images as a .tif and further work on them in PS CS6 but no!

Given the cost of ADOBE software and how many versions I have purchased over the years I am disgusted at ADOBE and as soon as something better is available I will change permanently (before you all post I own DXO, Affiinty, Capture One etc as well).

Personally I would like to see rental version of LR/PS be a 4 licence at one household/IP address option.
