Flash Pack Plugs and sockets

Hi,
Does anyone know where to buy the plugs and sockets used on Broncolor and Elinchrom Flash Packs, please? Even what they are actually called would be great.
Plug as per picture.

Thanks for your post. Some really useful info there.
Who would have thought it would be called "Rectangular connector 20 contacts - MALE" (even though it is not truly a rectangle).
They don't seem to sell the females and the cable but I will follow up with them.

Bob, there are various manufacturers, search for "DIN 41622". I used to buy them from Binder, Mpe Garry seems to be more popular right now. They are actually called "Messerleiste" (for the male part) and "Federleiste" for the female socket (20pin). That translation is from an OEM Manufacturer of flash tubes and probably related to represent the difference from the round plugs like the ones used by Profoto, Briese and others. Please note that the original broncolor Messerleiste has short pins for the trigger connection and longer pins for PE. You may order it as spare part from broncolor as you won't get these as standard, unless you order a huge amount that will be produced to your specification... HTH, Cheers, Ulf

Great information as always.
I bought a Broncolor Boxlite that had been converted to Elinchrom and I converted it back to Broncolor.
Looking at the wiring diagram all of the manufacturers used the same plug and the same cable with the same colours and usually the same pins. It is like they were all made in the same factory or at least the tech staff all drank at the same pub.

Is there any information on how these code resistors are assigned, please?

Bob, the code resistor is between b1 and b2 and is placed on the circuit board of the head. Values are 22k for 1600J, 39k for 3200J and 47k for 6400J. This information is not used on recent packs anymore, just if there is a connection, I´d probably go with 39k. Pulso8 pack has a different trigger pinout anyway. If you converted the boxlite from Elinchrom to broncolor make sure the trigger circuit is connected back to PE inside the head. To work with Elinchrom it was probably connected to the negative pin of the flashtube. There is no trigger capacitor inside the head for broncolor, unfortunately I am not sure for Elinchrom. While similar Elinchrom and broncolor don´t share exactly the same pinout for the connector. Cheers, Ulf

If you mean the green wire from the trigger transformer then that already went to the frame earth.
All I had to do was remove an obviously added 100 ohm resistor from A1 to B8/9/0 that was apparently a code-resistor and remove a link from B9-A9 and then it worked on a Pulso A4 pack. It would not work on a Mobil pack though. B1 to B2 was just a link and it seemed to be original.

Bob, NONE of the cables of the trigger transformer should be wired to a main electrode of the flash tube. If there are four cables, two of them must be wired the PE, one is connected to the trigger electrode and one is wired to the plug. May be you can send a photo and I have a look. Pulso4 will read the coding resistor so you might want to add one instead of the bridge. Is the boxlike equipped with modelling light and fan? Are both working correct? That's where pinout between Elinchrome and broncolor is different.

I have drawn a wiring diagram of how the Boxlite 30 is now.  There is a 10M resistor on the trigger board but I can't tell what it does.

The changes i made since receiving it wired for Elinchrom were to remove a 100 ohm resistor from A1 to B8 and remove a link from A9 - B9.

Currently the unit fires OK on the Pulso A4.
The only issue is that the modelling light.

The modelling light in Position II is on even if the Pulso is off.
If the Pulso is on with the modelling light set to off the Boxlite modelling light is on in Position I and brighter in position II.
If the Pulso is on with modelling light set to on the Boxlite modelling light is on full regardless of the position.
So you can only turn the modelling light off using the switch on the Boxlite.

I also attach the plan I have been trying to follow.

Hi Bob, wiring of the modelling light looks OK. A5 is normally used for the fan and has a direct connection to mains, strange that it also carries power when the Pulso is switched off though. A7 is the connection for the light, using non LED type bulbs will probably show the dimming function. Now with the trigger I really want you to check the connection of the blue wire. If that still has a connection to the trigger transformer you might run into problems soon. It might also explain why the unit won't fire with the Mobil pack. There are three pins from the trigger transformer on the solder side of the pcb, one will be connected to the white trigger input the remaining two should be connected to PE (green yellow). There is no need for either the red or the blue cable for the trigger circuit. Cheers!

Ulf,
I pealed back the PCB and traced it out.
As you indicated, the board was modified by cutting a track and running new red wire from the trigger to the Blue wire of the tube.
I lifted this off the blue and connected it back to the ground as shown.
The 10M resistor just sits across the tube, between red and blue.
It now works on both the Pulso and the Mobil.
I can live with the modelling light. I might get the code resistor inserted too. I presume 22K?

Thank you, glad this worked out and did not cause any damage, always happy to help :-) Using a 22k code resistor will limit power to 1600J on certain (older) packs. I don't know how the boxlike 30 is rated (if it is 3200J you should use the 39k resistor). Cheers, Ulf
