Epson Media Installer
« on: June 15, 2020, 01:27:16 pm »

Has anyone managed to use this utility on a Mac?

I'm trying to set up a paper type for Breathing Color Crystalline Satin on my shiny new SC-P7500. EMI will launch, gather paper types from the printer, let me duplicate one and let me edit it; but it refuses to save any of the changes. I click OK in the edit dialog and it just sits there. It will let me cancel (which is jolly useful) but not save (which would be even better).

Mac Mojave, latest updates.

A friend of mine with a Mac recently updated to Catalina had a similar problem - the solution was to enable OSX permissions for a specific application.  Apparently, and I speak from ignorance, if the app wasn't installed after the system updated to Catalina then the permissions aren't automatically set.  In his case the permissions had to do with external drive access.

It does not gather paper types from your printer, but from Epson servers, and pushes those to your printer, and an ICC profile to your computer.
Once downloaded and installed etc you can copy one and edit then the settings. It uses a SQLite database icm with some files per paper type. Looks like an access rights issue.

OK - but the difficulty is still there. I can copy it, I can edit the settings, but it won't let me save the changes. Do you know where the SQLite database may be?

Richard, thanks, but I'm still using Mojave. Catalina will be another can of worms and I want to deal with them one at a time!

Perhaps try this. In System Prefs go to Accessibility.  Check the left panel to see if there might be a reference to SQLite.  If so, check that and try again.  If nothing, you might have to restart after checking SQLite, if it's actually there of course.  Not at all sure about this, but perhaps worth a look at least.

Looked. Not there.

Correspondence on the Epson wide format printer group suggests it's a known bug in EMI.

Not sure if this would be of use, but these are links to one of the SQLite forum https://forums.mysql.com/list.php?145 and their home site as well https://www.sqlite.org/index.html

And yes, I don't know why I didn't mention the Epson Wide Format forum as well.  Obviously you are familiar with it and now perhaps have an answer and one more possibility to research as well.  Hope you're able to find the final answer soon Jeremy.   :)

Do not know where in MacOS it is stored. But look for a file called database.db or files with extension emx . In W10 it is under c://program data/EPSON/Epson Media Installer

It's in /Library/Application Support/Epson/Epson Media Installer. Browsing the data is pretty straightforward, but there's nothing obvious to edit; the useful information seems mainly to be links to files in another of Epson's folders.

Of interest, just to dispel one possibility, the file has read/write access enabled for all groups.

Can't find a file?  Download "Find Any File" from the App Store.  Files Galore.  :)

Yes, indeed, it is a bug in the new MAC version 1.1 of EMI. We owners of the new Epson 7570 and 9570 know about it. But, Epson was apparently NOT aware of it. I posted it first on Epson Wide Format Group. Then, Jeremy discovered it. It is apparently not a problem on Windows PCs. But, one of the PC users who had been in touch with Epson in California regarding other issues with his 7570 made them aware of it last week. So, we'll see what happens.

The tech rep with whom we spoke from here in Toronto had never heard of Epson Media Installer and told us that Epson does not support third party software. Eventually, we were able to make them understand that the software was indeed created and supplied by Epson for use with the new printers. But that was not a hopeful sign. So, while the new version of EMI finally shows a lot more on the PC of what is otherwise only available by the control panel on the 7570 or 9570 it is entirely useless insofar as it is unable to save any changes until or unless Epson fixes it.

We must hope Epson get round to fixing the bug soon. Releasing an editor which doesn't allow changes to be saved is perhaps not the best advertisement for their quality control. Happily, the printer itself is superb.

There is a workaround for Mac users: run the Windows version of EMI in a virtual machine, under CrossOver, Parallels, VirtualBox or Fusion. The only one I've used is VirtualBox, in which I run W10 when I really have no choice. The Windows EMI works just fine.

It's not exactly an easy fix, but it has let me do what I needed to do.

I have it on good authority that an updated Epson Media Installer (Mac) will be released within a couple of weeks.
