Spring Wildflowers in the Wichita Mountains
« on: June 03, 2020, 10:38:22 am »

The Wichita Mountains in SW Oklahoma really come to life in the spring. All of these - except the Red Poppy (#3) - are from that area. The first two are Indian Paintbrush in both red and the more uncommon yellow. #2 is wild Spiderwort and #4 is Indian Blanket (Gaillardia) also known as Fire Wheel.

My favorite is the Fire Wheel.

Thank you. Everybody loves the bold Indian Blanket. It's our official state wildflower and, this time of year, the roadsides and fields full of their color. We even have places named after them - using the scientific name!
