Capture One 13.1 abysmal import performance
« on: May 31, 2020, 08:31:39 am »

team,

I have been putting 13.1 through its paces and like the features, but on my super fast Mac Pro 2019 that import performance is just incredibly poor.

It takes around 10s per Nikon Z7 file, around 6s per Sony a9II file.

This is increbly slow in absolute terms and much slower than 13.0 on the same machine.

Has anybody else experienced similar issues.

It makes C1 pro nearly unusable for me.

Cheers,
Bernard

I've just added 268 files (from a Canon 5Div sitting on the HDD) it took about three seconds and building previews a further 5 minutes.

CO1 13.1, Windows 10, i7 3.8ghz, 32gb ram, Nothing fancy really, but working fine.

Using 13.1/20.1, I regularly import similarly sized d850 files as well as leaf credo 80 files with good performance on a 2017 MBP. I haven’t timed the imports but they’re much faster than what you’re seeing. It seems like you’ve been having nonstop trouble with C1+2019 MP, which is disappointing, as I have my eye on a Mac Pro similarly spec’d to one you’ve described in another thread.

Indeed, very disappointed in absolute terms and at a level that’s hard to describe if I factor in the price.

If I were a pro with deadlines I would be in very very deep trouble.

But this issue is specific to C1 pro, performance is as expected with other apps. I am sorry to say that C1 support has been terrible also. Slow in answering, inefficient and showing little willingness to propose any resolution approach but basic KB article recommendation.

On other Mac Pro issues, the machine also crashes regularly when coming out of sleep which has been reported by other users as well. I would personally recommend against the new Mac Pro 2019 at this point unfortunately and I am tempted to say against Apple for pro use.

It’s incredible that they have not been able to fix the widely reported crash in sleep with software, which means it may be a hardware issue with the T2 chip... That frankly nodoby asked for.

Cheers,
Bernard

I am still on C1v12 and hate that it doesn't import images quickly. My work around is to create a session, launch Apple's Image Capture and import into C1's Capture folder. If there is a faster way, someone please enlighten me.

you can just copy it in the Finder from your card  to your session map?

Yes, when I shoot untethered I follow those steps and when I go back to C1, I hit the Capture folder and the images are there.

After months of investigation without any success, and any useful guidance from C1 Support I have to say, I decided to perform a costly clean re-install of Catalina on my Mac Pro 2019...

And I have good news... after a careful planning and a few hours of work I was able to re-test the export performance of C1 Pro 20 on GFX-100 files and... it improved from 25s per file to around 1s...

I guess that I will never know what the problem was.

Happy for now, but I am still amazed at the incompetence of C1 support who was completely unable to help me diagnose this issue.

As far as import goes, it still isn't as fast as it used to be, but I was able to significantly accelerate performance by creating a new Catalog. It's now manageable.

The real question is, will I ever be able to gain back in runtime performance the time I have lost? Most probably not.

Cheers,
Bernard
