NEC PA271W repair
« on: May 26, 2020, 04:29:13 am »

Anyone ever taken apart a NEC PA271w-bk Spectraview monitor ?
Mine's just died and I'd like to get into it to see if it's anything obvious or fixable. After the routine fault finding with another monitor, yes it's got power and the cable is delivering the video feed.
Tried taking all the screws out, but nothing is seeming any looser. Google has been no help.

I'm reluctant to bin a £1.4k monitor without at least trying to see what's wrong.

A few checks you probably already did, just to be sure   ;)  :

If the front LED is blinking amber, check the status of the OFF MODE mode. When in power save mode, the LED on the front of the monitor blinks amber. While in power save mode, push any of the front buttons, except for POWER and SELECT to return to normal.

Check the signal input, “DVI-D”, “DisplayPort” or “D-Sub”.

LED on monitor is not lit (no green, blue or amber color can be seen): Power Switch should be in the ON position and power cord should be connected.

Cheers,
Jaap.

Yes, done all the normal checks. Power LED on, but no screen menus zilch.

Found my way in a few minutes ago by prising the front bezel off. Surprisingly basic and old fashioned, fragile, wiring inside. Nothing obvious and with no service manual, probably no ability to get parts and NEC not even answering the phone for a repair quote, it looks like a bin job :-(
I'm going to get an Eizo colour edge to replace it if I can find one in stock anywhere.

maybe this is an alternative

On the wrong continent and I'm not sure I'd like a refurb as this is the second NEC that's died on me now. Even then the new Eizo works out cheaper here anyway.

A colour specialist dealer in the UK tells me NEC don't care very much about the wide gamut monitor market now with no new models for years and poor availability. Judging by the lack of an answer today, that doesn't surprise me.

NEC themselves advised me that mine was not economically repairable.

When my last Spectraview failed the quote was silly. I was hoping that they might offer some sort of discount off a new monitor, but no answer so off elsewhere this time.

Same thing with my PA241W. NEC told me they no longer supported the monitor or repaired.
I looked online to see if I could find a repair shop and came upon Ampronix.
They were very responsive but the price was $475 for labor plus parts with a 1 year warranty.
Just not worth it as I could replace the monitor on eBay for less.

When deciding on a replacement, which I am still in the middle of, I considered the PA271Q but
then read on here of many having issues with Spectraview so I am now looking at Eizo.
I really would like to go with NEC as they are about half the price of the Eizo's but really
hesitant to do so.

I opted for an Ezio CS2731 and am very happy with it

In terms of price a LOT less than the current 27" Spectraviews in the UK.

Rhossydd do you do still photography, video, or both?
Here is the US, the NEC PA271Q and Eizo CS2731 are priced the same.
How would you compare your old NEC to your new EIZO?

I primarily use the system for still photography, just a small amount of video.

I really can't say there's much difference here. At the same size, same resolution and same claimed gamut I wouldn't expect any radical change. Color Navigator seems a better bit of software than the old Spectraview package, but once it's set up it's not something you'll need to use often.
The stand is possibly a little less solid than the NEC one, but again once set up it's not something you'd worry about.

I haven't bothered with any complex gamut testing and validation yet.
