Judging by the swimwear it was probably the 1957-58 flu pandemic.  These folks knew what to do without being told.

That's only because those of us from then were younger then but today we are damned sure not younger at all. Surprisingly, we are now about sixty years less young.

Couch potatoes grow from mental breakdown which can hit at any age, especially with unemployment lurking in the wings, or employment that exists more in the name than in the pay. Only when all else has failed you do you feel any urge to die slowly in a slouch on a couch.

To be fair though, couches are better now. They're more plush, lean back with foot stools that pop up, some are even outfitted with a small beer cooler on the side to save you that long walk to the kitchen fridge. I supposed couches will connect to the internet soon, for those who need automated beer ordering. Not everything modern is bad.
