Are we not photographers?
« on: April 06, 2020, 07:45:24 pm »

It amazes me looking at where the majority of activity resides on a photography forum...not discussing photography equipment, not discussing images, not discussing anything about photography...but endless childish political crap that ends up in name calling and stupidity.

Surely you come to a photography forum with photography interests...why all this political crap.

The C19 and all the developments surrounding it are advancing at a much faster pace than the camera and computer industries.

Sure...but we are bombarded with C19 from every direction...can't escape it. I thought maybe a photography forum could be a hiatus, but no...it's infiltrated as well. Looking at the actual photography related threads and they are just dead.

I'm active on other photography forums and there seems to be much less politics / c19 taking over.

Yes, it’s a good point.

I am probably one of the worst offenders... although I also continue to contribute to other threads. ;)

This event may be one of the worst world crisis that we will experience more or less directly in our lives. Few people will not be impacted at all.

It makes it hard to ignore.

Cheers,
Bernard

As I usually keep out of this topic I can say that I saw a direct correlation between a heated topic in the Coffee Corner and a decrease in photography related posts.

+1 Well said.
Again, what would Michael have done?
Photography, not politics.

I take my camera out and shoot every day despite being in a lockdown. I use a long lens and shoot across the valley or I photograph the many birds flying around and shoot macro images as well. I have put out a blog, two actually and post to Instagram. Speak frequently with other photographers still active in the industry. Here you mostly get moaning about how good it was n the old days and other such.

I like photography. It’s just not happening here anymore.

1. For those who wonder about the presence of non-photographic topics in the Coffee Corner: read the bloody label on the tin: it's what the CC is for, if you'll allow me to end a thought with a preposition.

2. For those who complain about the dearth of traffic in the photographic lanes: don't be pussies - get out there and create the traffic. This may stun you: conversation requires somebody to start it as much as it does others to continue it; sitting on your ass and reading it is just eavesdropping; of itself it has contributed nothing, zich, nada, niente, zero. Be a hero, not a zero. You're not in bed: contribute more than a moan.

You mean if you don’t like it try and change it? Fair point I guess. To me it is just what it is. If I want to sell ice I tend to head for the deserts and if I want to sell heaters I would give Canada a go. If you get the analogy. It might be a bit obscure.

Just imagine, if all that passion, angst and time was directed towards image making...

If only it could be thus!

I've been re-processing some of my old images.
The one below was taken 10 years ago at a small lake in Ontario.

Exactly what is there to talk about photography? Without politics, LuLa would wither away.

Fascinating, Les. When you first glance at it it looks as if the big rock and the grass are hanging in air.

Perhaps the only thing you can usefully do within the "speaking about" canon is refer folks to image websites where, with luck, you get to see good examples of the art - when it is an art.

Anyone can wax eloquent or even loquacious about how they may feel about photography, but by and large, such thoughts are of limited mileage. And even with those who manage that communication very well, there are the inevitably frequent moments of nothing. I"m thinking here of Leicaphilia, the blog that's kinda intended for people who own Leica cameras, but it's not exclusively so limited. Tim writes very well indeed, but by his own admission, there are periods when the well runs dry.

Do you want an excuse to rant about politics? How about photographic politics. Canon is better than Nikon. Lightroom is better than capture one. Apple is better than windows. OK I think you get my point or maybe you don’t get the point. Time for me to Move On I’m opting out of this thread. 😜

The good thing is that everybody can choose the threads he wants to follow. And some people will be pleasantly surprised that it is not mandatory to read the threads which are of no interest to them.

For example, since at this time I am not printing any images, I skip the Color Management and Printing forum sections. And it doesn't disturb me at all what people post there.

Maybe. This site didn’t have politics for a very long time, the problem is that it doesn’t attract too many new contributors. Part of that is the boys club where everybody pats everybody on their back but outsiders have a hard time gaining traction.

If you think this photography site needs politics to survive, than all it’s lost already.

It has been for quite some time. And it is not Kevin or Josh' fault, just nearing the end of its natural cycle. Like Kodak.
