What's your point?  First off, you were the one who posted the first post showing the other countries sudden higher rates.  What was your point doing that?  I was only trying to show the measure compared around a similar base.

Second, Italy, Spain, the UK had low figures a couple of weeks ago too.  It changed.  That was my other point.  No one should count their chickens..., etc etc.  You know that line already.  :)

You are absolutely right. You can usually get a discount if you pay in advance. Sometimes though a guy will actually make you pay in advance, with no discount, because he thinks you are a credit risk. That's happened before to me too.  And to Trump. Like I said a couple of posts ago, it might happen or it might not happen, you never know. That's the reason I always carry a blank check in my wallet. Besides, it gives you a couple of extra days to get down to the bank to cover it.
Let me make it a photography analogy.  Your first tripod is a cheapie because you're, well, cheap.  So you use it 6 months and the leg falls off.  So you swear you won't make that mistake again.  So you go out and buy a medium priced tripod and your camera falls off.  So after you save up, for another camera, you finally learn your lesson and go out and charge with interest a top-of-the-line Gitzo that you now have for over thirty years.  Pay now or pay more later.

I thought you told me that you watched the debate and said he won, but maybe I am thinking about somebody else. If you don't listen to him, you must read a lot about him, because you are always telling us what a great guy he is and that he has done a lot of fabulous stuff. You must listen to Biden too, because you said he lost the debate and is a scumbag or words to that effect, and that he hasn't done anything in forty seven years except the crime bill.
That wasn't me.  Maybe you're confusing me with that bald guy without the mask.

I've been thinking about the whole chicken hatching thing quite a lot. I think I used a baseball analogy before, even though sports analogies are sometimes problematic, and asked you how many innings we were going to play until we determined who won the game. Then I thought about the good old days when my son was a strapping lad, and I was coaching his tee-ball team.  Everybody agreed that we would play nine innings. The thing is sometimes when the other team was so many runs ahead, and given your rather lackluster performance in the early innings, there was no way on God's green earth that you were going to catch up, the ump would call the game before you finished the agreed on number of innings. But that was okay because it meant there was enough time to drop your son off at home, and go out and play nine holes.  Just looking at the stats of our COVID response, I am thinking that Trump should start thinking about which of his golf courses he wants to play next. Of course the other thing is that if you got a lot of games called on you early, the parents would start thinking about your replacement. What is really amazing is that youth sports teaches you so many of life's lessons. At least that has been my experience.

Those old cheap tripods are a good way to hold up flash guns or other less heavy devices. I've picked up several $10 deals on kijiji.

Well, of course.  We can all only try. The rest isn't in our control.  My photos definitely show that.  :) But ending the ball game early is no way to teach kids about life.  Trump never gives up.  He fights to the end.  I think that's a good trait to have.

Fighting to the end might work and it might not. I don't think it's sensible to be doctrinaire about that. Perseverance and stubbornness are close cousins. Sure, we read an example of some guy whose perseverance led to a good outcome but how many other stories are there of dumb pig-headed fools who bankrupted their families because they thought they were right and everyone else was wrong? Those feel-good stories about success may be the exception. Good when it happens but I don't think they are very instructive. Dig a bit and you'll probably always find a huge chunk of dumb luck lurking in the background.

I thought you understood my point. If not, here is a more detailed explanation: The countries which mandated mask wearing and banned large gatherings, like Japan and New Zealand have kept their infection rates low. Countries which relaxed their initial rules have witnessed virus explosion, exacerbated by the cooler weather and increased people contacts.

One of the best examples is Czech Republic. They were among the first countries closing their borders and mandating the masks, and as a result of these precautions they kept their infection cases very low. By end of the summer, the travel was in full swing in both directions and the stores and restaurants were open and busy.  That caused unprecedented explosion in infections. Last week, they were forced to return to their initial virus measures.

Another example is comparison between USA and Canada. In Canada, all levels of government are on the same page, and distributing the same advice, unlike USA where each level of government sends out a different message. In addition, in Canada there were no political rallies or other non-essential super-spreader group events.

I have an old Manfrotto metal tripod bought 40 years ago which wasn't very expensive. It's rather heavy for a hiking or paddling trip, but it still works flawlessly.

You make some solid points that I agree with.  But there's another ditty I remember.  Luck strikes those who are best prepared.  Or as we say here, you can't get the picture if you left your camera home.

If you recall, Trump originally said he would make the rules for the entire country.  Governors objected and said they were going to make the rules for their states as the president doesn't have the authority to tell them what to do.  They are right. It's called State's Rights.  Yet, Trump gets the blame even though he's powerless.  We are a federal system and that's just the way it is. 

Of course, there's good and bad in that.  If a bad decision is made from the top, then the whole country suffers.  Now, the residents of the state suffer.  More enlightened states do better.  Plus we get a sampling of which measures work better because each state is doing it differently.  For example, we have only a few states with legal marijuana.  Other states are watching carefully how things are working out there before they legalized pot in their states or not and how best to go about it if they do.  I believe in Canada pot was legalized across the nation and there are many problems with it.  Trying it out in one province first and learning the ropes might have been a better approach.

Regarding rallies, I've never been to one and wouldn't go Covid or not.  In America, we like to believe in freedom and personal responsibility.  We don't need government holding our hands all the time how guiding us and telling us how to take care of ourselves like many countries feel they need too. That's a slippery slope.  Politicians love power and any excuse to seize it at the loss of your liberties. We shouldn't make it easy for them especially when the situation is dire.

I dont believe that for a second.  The Trump tax gave a 20% tax discount on pass through businesses, which my very left wing brother also benefited from that he will never admit to.  I cant see him keeping that. 

I truly feel most Americans will fall for this lie since they dont directly pay taxes, and have it removed by a payroll company before they receive any funds.  When your account tells you you need to write an actual check for $25K to the IRS and you get to watch it get removed from you account, your view on taxes completely changes.

You are correct, actually making quarterly tax payments changes how one looks at Federal taxes. I suspect the vast majority of people only wonder what theirr refund is going to be when it comes to taxes.  Given the Federal pandemic payments made this year I think a whole bunch of people are going to be really pissed come tax time.

Some will actually have to give back the full amount they received if their income is above a certain amount.

I think Biden has made some exaggerations and aspirational statements this campaign season, but certainly no lies.

I too have a number of old Bogen pods bought over 40 years ago that are still going strong.  I don't like Carbon fiber for my work and prefer metal.  Heck most of my many light stands are Manfrotto and all over 30, like a bunch of my gear.  I also use a couple of different Benro tripods and they are great.  Never saw the appeal to Gitzo.
