Meanwhile, can one of the <insert usual suspects here> please explain the intent of this image?

It's Trump.  After the authorities tear gassed and flash banged hundreds of peaceful protesters in a park, he walked a few hundred feet across the road (accompanied by his attorney general, his press secretary, a ton of secret service personnel and a bunch of "advisors") so he could pose for this image, where he's apparently brandishing a bible in front of a church.

Just looking for a little clarity here, since he said nothing.

I think I can explain it. Traditionally, Americans swear an oath of honesty on a Bible. He's swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. He didn't really have to do that, because he's known worldwide for his honesty and good character, but I guess in these trying times he wanted to emphasize the fact.

The bigger mystery is where in the hell in that White House they found a Bible, and who in there actually recognized it as such? Maybe they were using it to kill moths? It's a head-scratcher.

I wonder how a minority woman looks like...

She is Asian, and I assume pretty good looking.

Thank you, but frankly I wrote it with the exact same spirit as all my other posts. I look at facts and I apply common sense, reason and logic....

The level of your self-righteousness and self-adoration is stratospheric, Bernard!  ;D ;D ;D

...  you I appear to loose a lot of objectivity as soon as the topic is Trump...

I totally agree  ;)

Another proof you are brainwashed by American leftist media. That is just not true.* A white cop is no more likely to shoot dead African-Americans than a black cop.

As for anecdotal evidence, in the same Minneapolis a year or so ago, a black cop shot dead a white woman... no buring, looting, etc. by whites.

* what is true, and in your defense, is that the media indeed reports it as such, i.e., reports only the stories about blacks being killed, although the percentage is more like 55% vs. 25% vs. 19% (white/black/brown). That creates the false impression the police is somehow after blacks only.

According to the authopsy, Floyd died from reduction of blood flow into the brain, caused by one cop pressing his neck, and two cops pressing his back/chest. Is that better in your book rather than dying from asfixiation?

Every death in such situation is bad, regardless of race.

This is a thread on the politics of the virus, not on race or riots. Keep it like that. I shall start deleting posts which don't have at least some connection to the topic, and banning the posters.

Agreed.

Perhaps if he is counted as yet another dead from the Chinese virus, everyone would be happy (including Jeremy)?  ;)

And again, it's not a Chinese virus. It was not engineered by the Chinese. It is a bat virus, it transferred to a human, and that happened to take place at a location in China.

BTW, you are the first to suggest happiness over the death of a person.
Sad if that's what it takes to make a point.

The name doesn't imply who created it (or not), but the geographical and cultural origin. Just like we call it the Spanish flu (even if it didn't originate from there).

The name of the virus is 'SARS-CoV-2', the disease it causes is called COVID-19.

And you are correct, the Spanish flu didn't originate there, if was labeled as Spanish due to political reasons. History repeats itself.

Indeed, it was imported from the USA. Spain was the first European country to report cases. It was an American flu.

I am not familiar with the subject, but Wikipedia says it came from France, whcih makes more sense, given the proximity.

Wikipedia says more than that - it says that the USA is another possibility, namely a study from 2018. But there is no consensus.

For sure it was not from Spain. But because Spain was neutral, it was politically correct to call it spanish flu, rather than American, British, or French.

In my town in NJ, we had around 110 deaths to date, 75% were assisted living care homes.  They didn't report how many actually were taken from their homes to the hospital.  But I assume the 75% include both groups because if someone gets sick, the staff in these homes are not prepared to help them as patients.  They call EMS and have them taken to the hospital where they either died or recovered. Yesterday our town had 0 cases of Covid, a milestone.
Unfortunately, we're back up with more cases and deaths.  We had 20 additional cases over the last three days and 75% were in long term care facilities.  That 75% is holding.  6 additional deaths although only two were in long term care and the other 4 in the general community.

I recall from NPR's Hidden Brain's podcast on the subject that the first major outbreak occurred in the US mid-west, might have been a military base, possibly people returning from overseas. I don't remember if they ever mentioned (or knew) where patient zero was from, only that it wasn't Spain. Many countries suppressed info about it but Spain didn't, so people called it the Spanish Flu and the name stuck. I don't remember the interviewee mentioning France, but it has been a while since I listened to the episode. Viruses don't know which country they're from, I don't think. :)

It was a very informative interview, https://www.npr.org/2020/03/23/820066211/an-unfinished-lesson-what-the-1918-flu-tells-us-about-human-nature.

Yea,what a world we live in.  It seems the virus has not taken a back seat in US journalism.   Who would have thought it would be newsreaders who made the virus "magically disappear" :)

So some indications from the working world.  We are shooting in a factoy setting now and I've only seen a very few folks with face masks and social distancing.  We have been in this factory many times over the last 10 years and its business as usual.  We have very little interaction with anybody so Im not really worried but its an interesting data point.  When taken with the scenes of everyday life both her at home and in the town were we are working now, it seems the vast majority has said screw the virus, we are going back to living.

BTW, this company has lots of orders for products that start at $175K and go up to a million.  No downturn for them.

You working yet Joe?
