Thankfully, today we are doing better, with all the measures you don't like, thus avoiding unnecessary deaths.

Yes, we are doing so much better in avoiding unnecessary* deaths:

Economic devastation from coronavirus could eventually kill more than virus, report says

The United Nations has reportedly predicted that the worldwide coronavirus outbreak may end up killing more people than the actual disease itself, a report said Monday.

That is really what you think?

But restarting the econmy once it is possible seems a good thing...
Possible means the virus is and stays under control - not causing many more victims.

_ i noticed that restrictions are carried out by nations. The borders of the nations are effectively giving tools to confine the virus.
A small country as the Netherlands can set rules for its own people, much harder it is to set rules for provinces within the country. People would have a problem accepting that.
Could someone tell me in what way NY has been locked up to the rest of the US?

Interesting theory; how does it square with similar deaths from unbridled climate warming? Should we, then, perhaps merge both of these things, Corrie and CW, and just let the deaths soar from other causes too, such as infection and famine? We could then happily throw in cancer and snake bite, because hey, both come naturally, like sex - in a natural environment devoid of kinks. Which of course, is taking a lot for granted.

Yesterday saw the opening of pavement service at cafés in Mallorca. Not crowded at all - in sofar as I have noticed locally. But ever fewer masks: who cares if one passes on death? It's natural - comes to all of us, both good and evil.

Be happy; smile at the guy with the scythe!

;-)

75,000 Americans at risk of dying from overdose or suicide due to coronavirus despair

That's not farfetched, especially if you'll include also the patients whose surgeries or cancer treatments have been postponed or cancelled.

Well then we must subtract the amount saved by people not being in positions for accidents which is the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA with about 170,000 accidental deaths every year. You give some, you take some.

Gotchu, lol.

Well as you pointed yesterday, there are no C-19 experts in the world, but plenty of golf experts.

Good point, and the roads are now clear for faster driving.
A couple of days ago, a young Ontario driver in his mother's Mercedes was clocked at over 300kmh.

But tell that to the guy whose chemotherapy was postponed by 3-6 months.

Chemotherapy seems to not missed a beat here in BC, at least in my area. My sister-in-law had surgery about a month ago for her cancer and has chemotherapy on a regular basis.

Usually chemotherapy within a hospital is already isolated due to the vulnerability of the patients receiving the chemo. Typically the cancer wards are either in separate buildings or wings onto themselves with their own isolated access.

Show us da money ..

Two showdowns over the scope of presidential power reach the Supreme Court today. The justices will consider—via live-streamed telephone hearings—President Donald Trump’s quest to keep his financial records secret. In April 2019, three congressional committees subpoenaed years of Mr Trump’s records from his banks and accountants. Lawmakers say the information could help them craft stronger ethics laws and guard against foreign influence in elections.

Several months later, the Manhattan district attorney issued subpoenas for Mr Trump’s financial records and tax returns for a grand-jury investigation into alleged hush-money payments to paramours. Mr Trump’s lawyers call both endeavours “unprecedented”. Efforts to “rifle through the president’s personal financial history”, they say, are designed only to “score political points”.

New York’s prosecutor counters that presidents would be above the law if they could not be investigated while in office. Precedent is not friendly to Mr Trump’s plea. When Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton faced other predicaments involving the separation of powers, the Supreme Court decided against both, unanimously.
Your first sentence proves the political nature of the Congressional investigation.  It's just an attempt to to keep investigations and smearing of Trump going before the election.  It has nothing to do with crafting legislation regarding the president.  Additionally, wHile Congress has the right to have hearing and craft legislation, the president also has his rights of keeping tax records secret as allowed by law in a Congressional act.  In this case you would have a committee overrule what an entire Congress has already legislated.  It seems to me that a congressional law overrules a small committee's desire to ignore that law.  Additionally, since the impeachment is over, and Trump was innocent, Congress can't use impeachment for seeking to see his records.

Regarding NYS prosecutor, I don't think they can overrule congressional protection of Federal tax records especially because the president was not charged with any crime.  It's a fishing expedition.  Additionally, it would grant any local jurisdiction who is from the opposite party or who wants to make a name for himself the right to investigate any president at any time while the president is serving.  It will become a game as is happening now with these Democrat investigations. This is why the constitution prohibits this.  Because our founders realized that investigations would become political in nature and the president would become too busy to do his job serving as president.  They wanted to give him a clear head and freedom to do his job in Washington.  If he did something wrong, then they have to wait until after his presidency is over to investigate, indict, try, etc.

PS:  Why didn't they subpoena former president's tax records as well as Trump's if this wasn't political and only about gaining information to craft legislation?

er... because for the last 40 years the former president(s) released theirs voluntarily, as have all the serious candidates IIRC.  Beyond that, said former presidents also divested themselves of their holdings that might create conflicts of interest.

Trump's a lying piece of garbage who doubtlessly has scores of conflicts that we ought to know about, and there's no doubt that the Democrats want to use this against him, but that doesn't mean it's not a real and actionable problem.

Plus, as Manoli said, this has already been litigated with little room for a new opinion this time around.  If the decision is anything other than "Donald, open the books. Now." you'll know the fix is in.

I'm glad for your sister in law. Others were not so lucky. For many patients, it's not only a 3-6 months delay, but the backlog of 200,000 postponed surgeries may take up to 2 years to clear.

Quote
In Ontario, only about 20 to 40 per cent of the usual volume of elective cancer surgeries has taken place during the lockdown, estimates Dr. Chris Booth, an oncologist and professor at Queen’s University.

“That’s been a massive problem for patients,” he said. “You can imagine how anxiety-provoking a cancer diagnosis is at the best of times, let alone during COVID-19 … and then on top of that they have uncertainty about when they can have their surgery.”

Provinces like Ontario and B.C. announced this week they’re resuming the suspended operations, but now have to cope with the backlog. That could take as much as two years to clear in British Columbia, Health Minister Adrian Dix said this week.

You do understand that term, "voluntarily," right? It doesn't become mandatory just because some guys did it voluntarily in the past.

I can guarantee you SCOTUS will decide in Trump's favor, not because it has a  conservative majority, but because the situation is different. Besides, it is only right to support the voluntary part.

What does that have to do with, "Why didn't Congress subpoena former presidents' tax returns?"

I can guarantee you SCOTUS will decide in Trump's favor, not because it has a  conservative majority, but because the situation is different. Besides, it is only right to support the voluntary part.

How's the situation different to the extent that it would immunize a sitting president from investigations arising from conduct as a private citizen, or would override the law that says tax returns "...shall be furnished upon request by [an authroized requestor]..."
