...which is why you won't find me quoting them. Why don't you guys try and do the same (with your links) from now on?

I rarely quote Fox.  In fact, I'll often quote the NY Times even though they're biased to the left as well.  One of the things about these medias being fairly honest about the facts is the way its presented.  WHile the Times reports factually in many cases, they put good stuff about Trump on pg 47 and bad stuff on page 1 in bold headlines.  The left media presents negative news days on end about the same thing.  Meanwhile good news about Trump they cover for five minutes.  So the presentation of factual news is biased and distorted.

Unfortunately, the public is not served when the press preaches to the choir.  The public doesn;t get the whole picture and it becomes like fans at a soccer match routing for their teams.  I try to listen to left media more than right media.  It's good to know what your enemy is thinking.  :)

When CNN posts a big negative Politics piece on Biden, that means a lot.  Word must be getting out that the Democrats might want a new nominee.  On the other hand, I don't think it's going to over shadow the economy.  How that is around election time will decide it.

I must say, I have no problem with bias - as long as you are aware of it before you proceed. It is the factual part that I believe is important. A fact remains a fact regardless if it comes from the Wall Street Journal, National Review or The New York Times.

I think balance is important, which is why I added "The American Institute for Economic Research" to my "American Politics" Folder (after Joe linked it) which has a right bias, as long as the facts can be trusted to a high degree I will always be ready to read "the other side's" point of view and will happily be persuaded by a good argument and give it respectful thought. Any thoughtful right-leaning person will always get a fair hearing from me - it's the gleeful "gotcha" point scoring right - or left-leaning person - who I will eventually learn to ignore.

I think the problem Bill is that big media like the NY Times can influence public opinion by the way they present the facts. If the public only notices page 1 ant-Trump or leftist headlines and misses contrarian news on pg 47, then the public decides thing based on bias and distortion.  In the USA it's a big problem because 90% of the news is biased left.  That includes truthful as well as untruthful news.  It's been going on here for decades.

What's happened because of cable, now we can have a few conservative outlets that never could exist before.  But the main media still holds sway, and they're left.  What happened with Trump is that he called it.  The whole middle America that was under represented suddenly had an advocate who wasn't afraid to go after "fake news" leftist media.  No one's ever done that in America until him.  Sure there were conservatives like William Buckley years ago.  But he was a minor influence.

I make no apology for having contempt for the entire Fox & Murdoch organisation. They are one of the causes of the toxicity in your (American) political discourse.

The problem with a news organisation being "pretty good" regarding the facts is then to know when to believe them and when not to....not so?

This is the problem with every single News organization right now and to single out Fox News is disingenuous.  Yes, they slant to the right, but many "trusted" news sources slant to the left just as much if not more.

The difference between Fox News, and say MSNBC, is that they openly admit it and go out of their way to not only separate opinion from news, but note which is which.  For instance, they have no qualms noting that Tucker Carlson and Hannity are commentators not journalists, and I largely ignore them anyway.  However, their Christopher W. Wallace and Bret Baier do good straight journalism.  Even their political analysts like Karl Rove and Brit Hume I find to be very honest, giving both positives and negatives for republican politicians and admit when someone on the right has a good chance of losing.  I almost never hear any negatives from left leaning political analysts on Democrats, which I find to even more dishonest.

For example, Karl Rove constantly points out negatives of Trump and how those negatives could cost him.  However, I have yet to hear any left leaning political analysts discuss any negatives of Joe Biden and they all insist he has this in the bag already.  This is deeply dishonest and goes right to their credibility; how can you actually take someone serious after this?

The issue I have with news outlets is when they do not say that they are biased commentators, especially when it is so obvious.  CNN's Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo are two prime examples.

Good point that Fox has straight journalists that give it straight and not tainted with bias.  The other thing is the walk-on commentators of anti-Trump leftist journalists from the NY Times who regularly appear on CNN and knock Trump.  How can anyone take the NY Times seriously when their journalists are taking sides on cable?  I read that the editor of the Times asked his people to back off on doing some of these appearances.  But nothing's really changed.  There's too much money being made by these reporters who are selling out their journalism degrees for mammon. If it requires taking a bias position to appear and get a fee, that's what they do.  Even ex-Republican conservatives are doing it.  When you listen to them today on CNN, you'd think they run the DNC.  It happens on Fox the other way too but not to the same degree.

The condition of the economy during this election is rather unique.  The economy is in shatters due to the government shutting it down, and opening it up is the only way to recover.  Although I don't think it is fair to say Dems are purposely costing people their jobs and business (nor feel it fair to say Republicans care more about money then lives), remaining shut down does satisfy their political leanings.

The downside is will people start to blame the economy on Democrats who don't want to open up quickly?  Depends on what happens in FL and TX, and other republican states opening up.  If those states open up without a great increase in fatalities, the voters will view the Dems as the destructors for keeping it closed too long.  If those states have an influx of fatalities, then voters will view the Republicans as destructors.

If the economy looks like it's getting better, people will be hesitant to change horses midstream. The one thing Trump has going for him is the appearance he knows business and gets things done.  People might not like the way he does things, but I doubt if they see Biden as someone who can execute a economic recovery.  Money talks; bullsh!t walks.

It is a shame this is the way they want him out. No man deserves that, not even a (gasp!) Democrat. It is a shame what they tried to do to Kavanagh too. No one should be cheered by media when they come with their wild, impossible-to-prove accusations 30-40 (!) years later. If something happened, go to the police. Three days later, fine, three months later, fine, perhaps even three years later (not really). But 30 years later!? When something is impossible to prove, the accusation can only leave a stain on one's life, as it is equally impossible to disprove it (not that it needs to, but the public is not well logically educated to understand gratis asseritur, gratis negatur).

Her accusation is ridiculous. It is impossible to digitally penetrate a woman, the way Tara described, without her cooperation (i.e., not resisting). Unless she was wearing a super mini skirt and no panties.

I can't believe I am defending a Democrat. Especially those Democrats championing the idiotic stance "women should be believed."

I've come to the conclusion that perhaps the way in which I am framing my argument against the lock downs is a bit too contentious.  I think maybe I should present it in another way, and if anyone has disagreements with part of it, let me know.

First, 7 weeks ago when this hit, we had too many known unknowns to generate any kind of targeted policy, and applying our limited resources (all resources are limited) to a general lock down was perhaps the best solution.  However, now we have answered many unknowns about the virus, such as what the infection fatality is about and who is most vulnerable, namely those over 60.  Also, since 40% of deaths in the USA are in retirement communities, it is of my opinion we are not focusing enough resources on those institutions.

Additionally, the one unknown we still dont know is when vaccine will be created.  However, it is impossible to actually predict this.

Due to this new information, I feel it is now time to focus our limited resources to those who can benefit best, like retirement homes.  Additionally, our resources are dependent on tax revenue, which is quickly being depleted by the lock down.  To prevent us from going broke and not being able to provide any recourses to anyone, we should open up with social distancing.

With that said, I consider NYC to be a separate problem and, essentially, feel that area is screwed.  Given that this virus spreads in interior/underground spaces along with the vast amount of those spaces you are forced to share with 1000s of others in NYC, it is beyond my comprehension how anything but a full lock down mitigates it there.

I agree with your point.  The issue is the hypocrisy from the Democrats. For them it's always been about politics not morality or protecting women. It's always been about splitting people up by race, gender, and class for political gains.  They don't give a crap about the people themselves.  And the way they are treating this woman shows exactly what they're up too.

I too would agree with this if Biden would stop doing it.  But he is not.

Besty Devos changed the recommendations on how colleges need to handle sexual assault allegation to allow the accused to have due process.  Biden came out against it less then a week after that Morning Joe interview were he said he deserved due process.

Although I certainly dont agree with his policies, Saul Alinsky's rule of holding your opponent to their same impossibly high standards is a fair and acceptable tactic, especially when they insist on not letting it go.  If the Dems admitted this is wrong and apologized to Kavanaugh, that would end it for me.  Until then, I will continue to push this.

Odds are nothing will ever be proven one way or the other.

Not so sure about that.

Here's an interesting article about how the spread of a/this Corona virus can be traced back to it's origin.

How coronavirus mutations can track its spread—and disprove conspiracies:
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/03/how-coronavirus-mutations-can-track-its-spread-and-disprove-conspiracies/

Quote
Tracking cases through mutations

Bedford’s lab has been using genetics to track the new coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, since the first U.S. cases started to multiply in Washington State in February and March. Back then, public health officials focused on tracking patients’ travel histories and connecting the dots back to potentially infected people they’d met along the way.

Meanwhile, Bedford and his team turned to unlocking the virus’s genetic code by analyzing nasal samples collected from about two dozen patients. Their discovery was illuminating: By tracing how and where the virus had changed over time, Bedford showed that SARS-CoV-2 had been quietly incubating within the community for weeks since the first documented case in Seattle on January 21. The patient was a 35-year-old who had recently visited the outbreak’s original epicenter in Wuhan, China.
[...]
Quote
First off, most of SARS-CoV-2’s underlying structure is unlike any of coronaviruses previously studied in a lab. The novel coronavirus also contains genetic features that suggest it encountered a living immune system rather than being cultivated in a petri dish.

And also this:

Fauci: No scientific evidence the coronavirus was made in a Chinese lab
In an exclusive interview, the face of America’s COVID-19 response cautions against the rush for states to reopen, and offers his tips for handling the pandemic's information deluge.
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/05/anthony-fauci-no-scientific-evidence-the-coronavirus-was-made-in-a-chinese-lab-cvd/
Quote
[...]"If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what's out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated … Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species,” Fauci says. Based on the scientific evidence, he also doesn’t entertain an alternate theory—that someone found the coronavirus in the wild, brought it to a lab, and then it accidentally escaped.

The Democrats have always taken phony moral stances that come back to bite them in the ass. It's one of the things about being a Democrat. They have repeatedly used unprovable or insignificant sexual claims (those are two different things) to attack political opponents, beginning with Justice Thomas -- this from the party of John Kennedy and Bill Clinton, the two biggest presidential philanderers of the 20th Century..

Now we have a demonstrated dingbat making accusations against Biden, and their previous stances are biting them on the ass again. They (or I should say, "we" because I am one) are never gonna learn.

Your honesty is refreshing, John.  This reminds me of how it came back to bite Sen Al Franken on the a$$.  He quit as Senator from Minnesota thinking that's what the plan about this was all about not realizing that it's just about politics, not about actually punishing anyone.  He just made an off-hand sexual comment, if I recall correctly.  He unfortunately, took the charges against him seriously, resigned, and now is forever more slapping himself on his head realizing how stupid he was for not telling everyone to go j--k off. Heck, he could have been running for president about now.

It is difficult to know how you guys are going to move forward from here because of the way you have dealt with it so far. I will tell you how we handled it - based on WHO guidelines (don't roll your eyes!) So I am not sure your "known unknowns" argument is valid - the same guidelines were there for everyone.  ;D

Within 22 days of our first case we went into a pretty serious lockdown including borders closed and the prohibition of alcohol and cigarettes! (Cigarettes get shared quite a lot in this neck of the woods.)

We were told then what the plan was, which was to buy time to get our response organised, then gradually open up - which we have now started. The point was, as you know, not to have medical facilities overwhelmed. A further benefit is that the longer you delay it - the closer you get to a therapy and eventually the vaccine...

There are five levels of "lockdown" and the whole country has moved down from Level 5 to level 4. I suspect that we will go to Level 3 after two weeks and so on...
All the while they are encouraging folks over 60 to remain at home.

The bottom line is that we were told that 60%-80% of the population are going to get the virus and hopefully they are now in a position to cope with whatever is coming....our numbers are going up at a good clip so it is now "game on".

I previously compared us with the UK - similar size populations and we started at more or less the same time. This allows you to compare strategies.

You talk about resources....boy, are we in a bad way financially (years of corruption), so you guys are "golden" in that area compared to many countries, believe it or not!

The point is, at least we have a "national strategy" which everyone understood and, up to this point, accepted.

I must also add that at this point, the population is getting "Joe Kitchen-ish" so we have very interesting times ahead.

In short - you need a plan with buy-in from as many folks as possible and many of your governors seem have them in one form or another.

Another thing, people are not stupid - they won't go out if they don't believe it is safe.

Not so sure about that.

Here's an interesting article about how the spread of a/this Corona virus can be traced back to it's origin.

And also this:

Fauci: No scientific evidence the coronavirus was made in a Chinese lab
In an exclusive interview, the face of America’s COVID-19 response cautions against the rush for states to reopen, and offers his tips for handling the pandemic's information deluge.

Maybe...

On Fauci, the claim is not the virus was “made” in a Chinese lab.  That’s a straw man.   The claim is that it was released, perhaps by accident.  Science,  ha.  It’s only as good as the people doing and reporting it.  BTW Fauci is said the have helped this lab in the past. Take that as you will.
