As was Trump, according to rumors. Then he caved in to “experts” predicting 2.2 million fatalities. Big mistake on Trump’s part.

Come November, we will see what voters will blame him for more: 300,000 babushkas dead (if Les is correct) or 30,000,000 unemployed.

Out of 300,000 official casualties about 100,000 babushkas, 140,000 dedushkas, and 60,000 xyz gens

When will see the 'enormous evidence' (Pompeo) that the virus came from a Chinese lab?

Presumably the evidence relates to the identity of patient zero?

Covid-19 curves / trends - as of May 3, 2020...

Les, using Linear instead of Logarithmic scale makes it more steep, i.e., more scary than it is.

Actually, the death curve in linear chart looks more appropriate to me. Until I see it going down, it remains scary for me.

I used the word lefty answering to your friend Alan with whom you appear to share a great deal of views... except perhaps about this topic about Trump being a conservative.  ;D

I would have to agree with him on this. Traditional republicans have always been about avoiding to increase the debt... and Trump is doing exactly the opposite. Obama reduced the debt and increased healthcare... Trump is increasing the debt while reducing healthcare... Who benefits? Hint... not you. Answer: the 1% making millions per year.

So Obama was trying to get the best of both world, introducing more empathy while reducing the biggest liability of gov (the debt) while Trump is doing the worst of both world. And this is without speaking about the death sentence to the economy that his downplaying of the corona has pronounced.

Cheers,
Bernard

And there it is, now starting to change talkin points.

In a couple of weeks you will be blaming the economy on Trump while ignoring you were for even worse lock downs.  It is going to be funny.

FYI, Obama did not reduce the debt.  Where did you get that from? ???  And insofar as healthcare, Obama's policy increased rates beyond belief and made it even less affordable.  The free market was working well before Obama stepped in a screwed it up with over regulations.

And Biden's plan will doing nothing  but put us on a path to single payer government provides all insurance.

It’s a matter of probabilities...

In this case it’s zero because I never drive to the park.

I know it’s a stupid answer but not any worse than your objection.

I only drive 6,000 km per year, 95% of which on highways. But I may still cause accidents. However there really isn’t much of a choice and driving serves a purpose.

Guns don’t.

Cheers,
Bernard

The right to bare arms is our last stop protection against tyranny.  That is a pretty good purpose.

I can't imagine armed uprising in USA. It wouldn't end well.

Well that goes without saying, however who wins would be up in the air.

Just because a government is significantly more well armed then who it is fighting does not mean it will win.  The rebels in the 1770s beat the extremely well armed British, and 200 years later the poorly armed rebels in Vietnam beat the extremely well equipped USA military.

So the idea of an armed citizenry not being able to bet a much more armed government is a false statement.

No, your only stop against tyranny is your critical thinking as a free man. Sorry I meant should be because you have demonstrated time and again that you are very much willing to give up on that in favor of a blind support to whatever Trump says.

Bernard

I have been very consistent on this. Had Trump taken the right measures timely he would have killed the pandemic like Germany did. And the impact on economy would have been a lot less. So yes, there is zero doubt whatsoever that a large part of the economic impact is due to Trump’s hesitations and long downplay of the pandemic.
‘
The same downplay you admitted yesterday but, very creatively, blamed on the press.  ;D

Apologies, I got confused will Bill Clinton.

The view that healthcare was working in the US before Obamacare is, to say the least, a significant departure from reality.

Bernard

There were not more murders by hammers than long guns -- there were more murders by hammers and clubs and other blunt objects than with long guns. This is a silly discussion, because hammers are made for a special useful purpose, driving nails; a few of them may have been used to kill people but I would bet a large amount of money (to refute your silly point) that the other weapons in the category (clubs and other blunt objects) were used more than hammers. So it's not "hammers killed more people, period." Allll kinds of things can be used for murdering people, including hammers, sticks, ropes, kitchen knives, fists, gasoline, etc. But only one of the things we're talking about are specifically designed, built and intended to be used to kill people, and those are semi-automatic weapons -- rifles and handguns. They are absolutely unnecessary for any recreational purpose that couldn't be done with much slower-acting guns, single-shots, double-barreled shotguns, bolt-action rifles and revolvers, and as I said somewhere else, the fantasy that these slobs could use their weapons to prevent a government tyranny is a fantasy. Scores of people are murdered every year because of this stupid, silly fantasy. The weapons are used for murder and to intimidate neighbors and fellow citizens. We had a guy show up at a meeting here with an open carry semi-auto pistol worn on his belt, which is legal, but it was known in advance that there would be some hot tempers at this meeting, though nobody expected any kind of physical violence, and his presence scared everybody including the cops and the people who were technically on his side in the discussion. And that was the intent. Whose idea of democracy is that?

Rifles and handguns together were responsible for more than 14,000 murders in 2018. These weapons make it possible for a single person to kill masses of people, because that's what they're well-designed to do. Very, very few other things accessible to crazy people will do that -- bombs are one, as Tim McVeigh proved on Oklahoma City, and I would point out that he was encouraged in his work by the very same kind of people who are marching around with the AR-15 style rifles, the right-wing anti-government crazies.

Here is what I said, originally, no need to repeat the entire thing with every post.

So do hammers and other blunt force objects, in fact they kill far more often than long guns.

Guns are not just for recreation they are also for defence.  How nice of you to decide that John Q Public can only use a single shot. bolt action, double barreled shot gun or revolver to defend him or her self - possibily against a foe with a semi.   Who the F are you to decide that?  They (we - me) have the right to defend themselves and their property, and to defend against a hostile and out of control government.  There are about 400 million firearms in the US.

As to your "problem" with a citizen showing up with an open carry weapon?  Good for them.  If you felt intimidated or other bad actors did, then it was job well done.  You said it might have gotten hot in the meeting, but it seems the  presence of the firearm prevented that.  Imagine that.

Yea, guns of all sorts kill lots of Americans.  No dispute of the numbers, but where are those deaths coming from?  The bulk from gang and drug violence.  People who want to kill will do so.  With whatever they have to do the job.  If its not a gun here are other means.  True mass shootings are just a small factor in the overall gun death rates.  Heck we kill 35,000 or so Americans a year with cars and we deem that as acceptable in everyday life.  665K from Heart problems and 167k from preventable injuries, both of which are largely self inflicted.  In the scheme of things gun deaths are bad but not of epdemic proportions.

And of course there are around 400 million firearms in America and the ownership is a constituionally protected right.  Lets say you somehow decided that no semis of any kind are allowed.  How do you get them back?  Oh yea some good guys might reluctanty give them back but do you think you will get them back from the bad guys?  Which puts us right back where we started...good people let to try andd defend themselves against semis, with inferior firepower.  I 'll bet a government bent on controlling the population, or the criminal element  would find that quite comforting.

Well, again, driving is very low risk (and is strongly affected by how one drives), has a different intent and is universally accepted.

As far as I am concerned I never drive to go shoot. I sometimes drive my family to places where a car is the only convenient means of transportation and use the opportunity to shoot some images.

But I assume you meant driving in general. Do most of the people who drive have other options? The answer is no. Do most gun owners have the option not to buy guns? Yes they do.

In honesty I am not convinced that your example is any relevant, certainly not as an example of activity where a very unclear personal advantage is selfishly prioritized over a very clear collective disadvantage.

To the extent that I am wondering whether you understood what I am talking about?

Cheers,
Bernard

But the person who has a gun is no more interested in killing people as most drivers are. 99.99% of gun owners safely own and control them.  They're kept in their homes to protect themselves and their families or are used for target shooting or hunting.  Protecting one's family is just as necessary for some people as dribing is to you.  You're just line drawing claiming your priorities are more important then others.  That's the definition of selfishness.  Personally, I don;t own a weapon.  But many Americans have grown up with them, are comfortable owning and using them.  There's just a legitimate to them as a car is to everyone else.

No sense trying to communicate with Bernard, he has told us repeatedly he knows more about so many things than the rest of us.

{s} Who can compete with such greatness.  Besides guns are just a Phallic symbol.  So much more so than owning the biggest, baddest computer, the very best cameras and lenses,  and upgrading constantly , just to make personal photographs.{/s}

More power to anyone who earns enought to buy what they want.
