Never said that.  Only "lockdowns lead to less death" is nothing but a truism; just look at all of the car fatalities we have avoided.  Pollution is down too; I'm sure asthma sufferers are in a pig's heaven right now.  But anyway

Point is, Bernard keeps on acting like no Dem, not a single Dem, holds any responsibility here.  And it obvious he has a soft spot for Cuomo.  But the media is finally truly accessing what went so wrong, and Cuomo is in the crosshairs.  Sure, Trump got hit too, but you cant have a NYTs story without hitting Trump, but now even the Times is going after Cuomo.

The problem is for all of this media nonsense is its all hindsight bull crap.  Coumo, like Trump had so called exterts bending their ears giving advice on how to act in regards to the virus.  Both of them also have peoples livelyhoods to consider as well as health issues.  In the US, the so called experts were calling this a non event that was very low risk right up to the day the Federal guidelines were introduced. You gotta love the so called "logic" that says Trump should have acted sooner and that he does not pay attention to experts when his actions were driven by the "experts".

People with zero clue and even less knowlege of how the the US works like Bernard, think they can just wave their hands and proclaim guilt.  He thinks trump acted too late.  That he should have closed the country.  Bernard continues to get it wrong.  All Trump can do is advise and he did.. Bernard thinks the Govenors went too fast for Trumps liking, but once again Bernard has zero clue about what he is talking about.  One one governor was ahead of Trump and that was California and his lockdown order came the day before Trump announced the guidelines. All others came AFTER Trumps guidelines were issued.

Even worse people like Bernard have no clue aobut how the politics of this are working...and yes there are politics, given this is a Presidental election year.  Dems are looking to pummel Trump.  Period.  Trump must respond. Period.  And his "I'll say when the country opens" was a shot over the bow of the good ship democrat.  It was not Trumps saying he was King, it was Trump getting the dems to say he was not king, thus negating one of their potential big arguments.  Politics...regardless of what else is going on ... the Dems are still playing it and Trump must respond.

It was delivered by a pharmacy...

As is my food, during an 84-hour house arrest. Who's to say the people preparing and delivering the food were properly protected and negative?

Nobody is saying that experts are always right.

Experts being sometimes wrong isn't related at all to the obvious and basic concept that a disease doen't spread when there is no contact between a sick person and other people.

Cheers,
Bernard

Sure, but no one, at this time, is giving them the hard questions to make sure they may not be wrong.

The entirety of the media, and the science community, are fixated on social distancing.  It could very well be the case that this is creating a confirmation bias falsely in favor of putting too much emphasis on social distancing.  And the worse part is that so long as this remains and no one starts questioning the narrative to make sure it is not false, if this confirmation bias is present, the experts would not even realize it.

This is my issue with the media right.  They are so concentrated on being politically tough on Trump, which is not difficult, that they are not asking any of the experts scientifically tough questions.  No one is questioning them, the experts, about alternate explanations and really making them prove their case.

It's an abject failure of the media, specifically the White House Press Corp.

That is exactly my point.  Social distancing is not the same of low population density, and can not be expected to be anywhere near effective.

I'm sure the population density and high use of public transportation play a huge role in the outbreak in NYC, in addition to the amount of international travel arrivals.

So what are you proposing as an alternative to social distancing? Evacuating our densely populated cities? To where?

Jeremy is, like Trump, just late in a acting like a king.

Just kidding. I think Jeremy already said he is not going to monitor closely this thread. Hence PLAYPAN.

Of course — no-one is suggesting otherwise.

Whatever social distancing makes sense, it should be voluntary. Otherwise, in NY and similar places, wear masks, gloves, and wash your hands often.

Of course not, dont be silly.

But we should be asking if this really is as effective as the experts are making it out to be, but no one is doing so.  The White House Press Corp is just fixated in Trump that they are not actually being tough at all.  They are only looking for political screw ups, not getting tough on the experts to make them prove their case.

Like I said, if it turns out that social distancing is not the great key everyone says it is, except the reality and get the economy back moving, albeit with some common sense.

By the way, I know several people in NYC at the beginning of this that have already moved out, but not because the virus.  They had to move, back in with their parents, since they no longer could afford rent.

There is plenty of proof even from centuries ago. Portugal's royal family during the plague events would take refuge in alentejo province, the least populated then, and the least populated now - in fact, alentejo today has the lowest number of cases and still no deaths from CV19.

In 1918, the US cities that implemented lockdown sooner ended up with the smaller number of deaths.

This is notrocket science, virus are very basic entities.

Locally, in Pollensa, Mallorca, there is a steep mountain right outside the township, with a monastery on the top (Puig Maria) and during the plague, that is where the wealthy went to escape and to survive: extreme isolation. They understood about that even back then. We have to note that not everyone today is as smart. Weird.

First reported case in Portugal 1sr March. State of emergency mid-march, today it will be extended 2 more weeks. Effect - R0 went down from 2.5 to 0.8. You can´t have economy without people.

A leader makes is choices, but can not keep blaming others if his choices end up being the wrong ones.

How to open up has been already decided in Portugal, we are looking closely to what other countries who are over the "peak" and are reopening are doing, and what the results andlessons learnt will be. In May, small businesses will reopen, companies, services, etc. With close and tight monitoring on adaily basis.

Paulo, you are replying to somebody who wants to see somebody else (a dead person!) laying an egg outside the White House. How can you argue with that mindset? It will destroy you.

You don't see the inherent contradiction? Not everyone is as wealthy today either.

It was delivered by a pharmacy.  She is going blind, not filly yet, and cant really leave the house on her own anymore.

So she unfortunately did meet someone right? Furthermore high risk people.

Bernard

The New York Times...Orange Man Bad, WHO good...revising history one story at a time.

W.H.O., Now Trump’s Scapegoat, Warned About Coronavirus Early and Often
The World Health Organization, always cautious, acted more forcefully and faster than many national governments. But President Trump has decided to cut off U.S. funding to the organization

Ooops... sh1t happens. Never mind that in most countries makeshift hospitals are operating at 10-50% capacity. Or that doctors are hanging out on social media.

Neither have I. Nor 95% of those infected.

Doctors, too, have to have time off to function at their job.

Makeshift hospitals - in the UK at least - do no take all sorts of patients: they are purpose-built to handle overload. As normal medical attention to non-covid patients has been almost totally suspended, doesn't that tell you something about how full 'normal' hospitals aready are with Corries' babes?

We seem to be going along the same path.... I liked Portugal's idea of already starting to think about tourism and the fact that for the near future anyway local tourism will be the focus. That makes complete sense and I'm sure other countries will pick up on that idea too.

Facebook works to try and rehabilitate the WHO too...

Facebook will start steering users who interact with coronavirus misinformation to WHO
The move by Facebook is just the most recent step in an aggressive and coordinated response by it and other tech companies to promote facts and guidance from reputable sources.
